I dunno about them in particular, but in general half a million Germans emigrated to the US between the world wars.
Why would you grin? Sarcasm doesn't need to be cruel. Assume they were tortured and killed. So, it's sad...

I made a grimacing face, because I felt like they might not have fared so well in the Holocaust. Very sad indeed. But hopefully they lived a happy and long life somehow.
