Short video and sound typing test:

Build details:

  • This is a wired Klor build, using rp2040 mcus

  • used a choc v1/ks-27 version of the original Klor pcb. Made by github.com/sadekbaroudi/KLOR

  • Taihao navy blue choc keycaps, mx-spaced + some accent MBK keycaps in thumbrow

  • Lubed Ambient silents 20g switches, mostly nocturnals.

  • (2) blue oled 128x64 displays

  • (2) 20mm tall ec11 encoders w/ black gmmk knobs

  • olive green 3d printed case and black 3d-printed switchplate

  • 1.5mm thick clear black acrylic covers

  • with 3d printed keywell adapters

On the 3d-printed case and switch plate:

it's a slightly edited version of GEIST's original case files. stl file and details of the changes I made here: https://www.printables.com/model/1320402-klor-konrad-3d-printed-keyboard-case-for-top-mount

I went with 1.5mm thick acrylic covers, but you could go thicker ~3 mm depending on the length of m2 standoffs used. I had to experiment with that to have it -kinda- flush with the case walls and oled beneath.

On the keywell adapters:

Overall the adapters are pretty smooth with a few caveats.

It's made by github.com/Rookwork/Voyager-keywell-adapters . They designed it for the ZSA voyager but it works fine for any choc board too.

It's difference in angle for every tilt from homerow is more subtle than other 3d-printed keycap tilters I see here, but still enough that it give a distinct change in sensation for my fingers. It did make the flat-profiled taihao keycaps more enjoyable to type on for me.

I think the very light 20g choc switches I use and the 3x6 layout, instead of a 4x6 layout, resulted in no noticeable awkward friction as I press any key down. I still have allowance to press most keys slightly off-center too.

Keywell adapter caveats:

  • if I use the top numrow tilt adapters (the github file^ with the biggest angle tilt) like I did on the thumb-keys, I do need to hit those keys more dead-center or else there's this small awkward friction mid-press. Took no time for my thumbs to adjust since the angles I chose were what felt natural to me.

  • seems keywell adapters aren't optimal for fighting games? Tried this with Tekken 8, and the angled keycaps kinda messes with my timing on multiple keypress combos. Which is weird since I do have combos on my vial layout for "normal typing" and they all work well, but it weirdly feels off when I play this specific game. Might be better for me to stick to flat boards for competitive games that rely on strict frame/combo timings, otherwise the adapters are great.

  • I find these suitable for the klor which is mx-spaced and used flat keycaps (just like the ZSA Voyager), but found it was unnecessary for a choc-spaced keyboard with sculpted keycaps. I tried the adapters on my Hillside with sculpted LDSA keycaps, and it was still usable but sometimes felt cramped - like I can't "stretch my fingers out" while typing anymore.

  • The height of choc keycaps with these adapters are now taller, but still found it to be slightly less than the height of an mx switch build with dsa keycaps (see last pictures for comparison). No biggie if you hover-type.

  • hillsideview46 by wannabecoffeenerd
  • wired build, rp2040 mcus
  • added oled 128x64 displays using dupont wires + right angle pin headers
  • 15mm ec11 encoders w/ gmmk rotary knobs
  • Ldsa choc keycaps, w/ some cheap legend stickers slapped on its front
  • lubed choc blue switches

*A few mbk keycaps for the thumbs too.

Mounted some standoffs on the switchplates to add oled acrylic covers, but digging the exposed look for now.

Switch to GEIST TOTEM (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by rizo@sh.itjust.works to c/splitmechkeyboards@lemmy.world

Switched from my old (tethered) Ferris Sweep to a bigger (4 more keys) GEIST TOTEM with dongle. I even did some tinkering/updating.

  • made the body a bit bigger to support a bigger battery
  • updated the 3d model to print with minimum supports
  • embedded magnets to allow snapping the halves together for transport

on the left half you see some magnets stuck on it as spacers and to show where I put them.

Little shenanigans on my Lily58 Pro I know it doesn't looks fancy, nor clean, but there is no good option for that in the conditions i wanted, unfortunately, having that big ass 1000mAh battery. I could make it look more clean with the price of using much longer standoffs, having the battery between the PCB and base plate, making the overall height of the keyboard higher about 6mm, which i wanted to avoid that at all cost. So i had to sacrifice the fanciness for practicality, cutting out the acrylic base to accommodate the 1000mAh battery. I don't see at the moment a better way, but if someone do have suggestions i am happy to hear them
