Welcome to Maple Music, a community on the Lemmy.ca instance focused on bringing attention to Canadian music and musicians!

Like everything else, Canada has a rich music culture, spanning from the traditional music of the First Nations to a unique spot in the Punjabi music scene, a rich variety of folk performers to the big names in pop, and established underground music cultures such as the Edmonton hiphop and rap scene to the metal scene in the Atlantic provinces.

This community allows for postings of Canadian music news, covering anything from the local scene to world-renowned names such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Celine Dion. It also allows for sharing Canadian musicians you wish to give a spotlight to, individual songs and albums by Canadian artists you enjoy, and even a bit of Canadian music history seeing how poorly documented some Canadian music history can be at times.

--

Please post albums using album.link and songs using songs.link! This allows people to listen to the song on whichever platform they prefer, assuming that it is available there. This is not strictly required, but is the most ideal way to share music.

Community Rules and Guidelines:

  1. Follow Site-wide rules: We are all guests in lemmy.ca's house. The house has rules that we must follow. We are polite guests.

  2. Formatting: Song and Album posts should follow the this format: "Musician - Title [Genre] (Year) (track length)". Genre, Year, and track length are not required but encouraged. Posts regarding news articles must include the article title in the post's title. Otherwise, make titles relevant to what you are trying to talk about.

  3. On Topic Posts only: All posts must be related to the Canadian music scene to some extent. For example: News about Taylor Swift will be removed. News about Taylor Swift having a Canadian tour will be kept.

  4. French & English Equal: French and English content, posts, and comments are equally welcomed and encouraged.

  5. Self-Made Music Welcomed: Are you Canadian and artistically talented? Feel free to post it here! Please do limit excessive self promotion however.

The No Rules:

  1. No shaming of music tastes: Mumble rap is not for everyone, and neither is country or dubstep. Avoid all "real music" type comments. Refrain from downvoting music that is not your taste, everyone should feel welcome regardless of the genre you enjoy.

  2. No music piracy. Much of the musicians and music shared here are likely small independent acts that deserve fiscal support. If money is an issue, please look into free and/or Creative Commons releases, a list of such titles will be made and built on as the community grows.

  3. No Spam: Please avoid spam. Rather than make individual posts for each song by a musician you like, instead make a singular post bringing attention to the musician. This applies for self-promotion posts as well.

  4. No AI Generated content: AI music posts will be deleted. This community is made to support Canadian talent. An AI cannot be Canadian, nor can it generate truly original content without infringing on countless other artist's copyrights.

  5. No doing stuff that makes me need to make more rules: Moderation reserves the right to take action on anything seen as detrimental to the community. Just cause I didn't write it down here doesn't mean it is necessarily allowed.

Rules are subject to change as the community grows.

Metric was formed in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, and by 2006 was quickly gaining in popularity, with various nominations by Canadian-centric awards such as Juno Awards and Polaris Music Prize. It wouldn't be until 2010 that they won their first Juno Award "Best Alternative Album of the Year" for their 2009 album Fantasies.

Black Sheep in particular was released on August 10th, 2010 on the Band's MySpace page. This song would be used as the soundtrack for the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, although the song is sung by Brie Larson portraying the character Envy Adams instead. Bryan Lee O'Malley said that Envy Adam's poses in the graphic novel were inspired by concert photos of Emily Haines (the lead singer of Metric).

Blacksheep is Metrics most listened to song on spotify, with 163 million listens on the Brie Larson vocal version (as used in the Scott Pilgrim movie), and 131 million listens to the band's original version.

Stompin' Tom Connors is perhaps the most venerated Canadian country/folk songwriter and singer of all time -- and for good reason. His entire musical career was dedicated to singing and celebrating Canada and it's culture. Charles Thomas Connors long career netted him various accolades and honours in his name, although connors was famous for being humble and declining many of his honours.

There is much that can be said about Tom Connors, but his love for Canada was genuine and always first and foremost in his life.

I feel as though this song might give us insight to how he would feel with current US-Canada relations.

If you don't like Canada.... "Ya can better serve your country by living somewhere else".

From the Kon Kan Wiki: "Kon Kan is a Canadian Synth-pop concieved and formed in 1988 by Barry Harris in Toronto, Ontario. Kon Kan were awarded a 1990 Juno for the song " I Beg Your Pardon" and nominated a 1991 Juno Award for the Single "Puss N' Boots/These Boots Are Made for Walkin''"

It seems that Kon Kan is somewhat active again, with new singles being created in 2023, and a recent tour in Brazil. Most new updates and activity seems to be on Kon Kan facebook page.

A great musician who faced more than his share of demons. I first saw this video 5 or so years ago, and I've been coming back to it regularly since. There's an authenticity to Stewart's singing, a pained optimism of sorts, paired with the agressive mandolin-playing. It just speaks to me.

The Royal Foundry is a Canadian alternative pop quartet band whose core is the Edmonton couple Jared Salte and Bethany Schumacher. They initially formed as a folk duo but, in 2015, began a significant revitalization and revision of their sound, incorporating elements of 1990's Brit-Pop with power-pop stylings of groups like Arcade Fire, and 1970's Progressive Rock elements inspired by groups like Yes and Supertramp Their music has been described as alt rock, indie rock, alternative pop, and Synth Pop.

Scott Pilgrim (1998) is perhaps one of the most over the top teenage angst punk bands I've ever heard -- perhaps precisely because the original band members were young teenagers when it was created. Plumtree was formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1993 and disbanded in 2000.

Lynette Gillis and Carla Gillis still play for the rock band Overnight and occasionally Bells Blanging. Catriona Sturton lives in Ottawa and teaches harmonica inbetween making blues music.

Amanda Bidnall went on to become an accomplished academic in history and is now a freelance editor.

Nina Martin went on to become a professor of Geography with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The song is most well known for inspiring the famous graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim (2004-2010) by also fellow Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley. The Scott Pilgrim franchise would end up taking up much more cultural real estate than the band or song itself.

From Elisapie's Inuktitut (2023) Album which was a nominee for the 2025 JUNO Album of the Year award. The album features Inukitut language covers of various classic songs that Elisapie described as having significant personal memory related to. She viewed this project as an opportunity for building bridges between Inuit and non-inuit cultures.

This song in particular is a cover of the famous (and my personal favourite) Leonard Cohen Song Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye (1967).

Leonard Cohen needs no introduction. Perhaps one of the greatest Canadian artists and an pillar of immense pride for the city of Montreal.

Dance me to the End of Love (1984) is one of my favourite less popular (but still insanely popular) Leonard Cohen songs.

Starting out as a street musician, Jérôme 50 has become an indie darling in Québec, most known for his hit song Tokébakicitte (which loosely translates to "We're in Québec, here!" and explores different Québécois stereotypes), here's a song from his most recent album released at the beginning of May of this year.

The Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie were a Albertan band active from 1987-2005 and feature comedy songs parodying historical events and Canadian culture in general. One of the most famous songs is "The Toronto Song", in which their Albertan roots show through in a playful banter about the rest of the country (particularly Toronto though).

Song Created in 1993-2000, released in 2000 under the Tangents Album. The Tea Party was formed in Windsor, Ontario. Active in the 90s, and since reformed in the 2010s, they are still active and releasing music.

Last song I'm posting for the night! I planned on stopping sooner but got excited when I realized The Tea Party is actually from my home city of Windsor! I had no idea. Would explain why I recognize all of their songs, I must've heard them a couple hundred times over the radio.

I guess I kind of have a thing for every variation of rock music, huh?

Created in 1985 by Scottish-Canadian Lawrence Gowan. Gowan was born in Scotland, but immigrated to Scarborough Ontario when he was younger. Gowan's career is mostly entirely contained within Canada, with most popular being in Toronto, the epicenter of his career. As of this post, 1/10 of Gowan's 101k monthly listeners are from Toronto.
