Video Description:

On this week’s show, you’re getting two scoops.

It’s a Useful Idiots double header, with former CIA Agent Barry Eisler, who left the CIA to become a spy-thriller novelist (get his latest book The System at barryeisler.com), and Ben & Jerry’s Cofounder Ben Cohen, who was arrested recently for interrupting RFK Jr.’s congressional testimony to protest US funding of Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

First, Barry Eisler explains his role as a covert operative in the CIA, and the truth it taught him about American tribalist politics.

I spent three years in a covert position in the CIA. It taught me a lot about the culture and machinations of the U.S. government and what some call the deep state. And it became great fodder for a guy who then went on to become a full-time thriller writer.

What I found there is in some ways a microcosm of tribalism politics in America. And it's this.

A lot of people think, ‘oh, is it a bunch of liberals there? Or is it a bunch of conservatives?’ But the fundamental, underlying, and much more meaningful political culture in the CIA is the belief that ‘Hey, America is a force for good in the world. And everything we do, whether it's traditional espionage or shading off into coups or even invasions and occupations, that's all just to make the world a better place.’

It's that more fundamental thing where they really believe that America is a force for good in the world and that our mistakes are just innocent mistakes, rather than something much more nefarious.

Subscribe for the full interview with Barry Eisler, where we discuss Russiagate from a CIA perspective, watch Palantir’s Alex Karp let slip that his AI kills people, and the connection Barry’s spy thrillers have to Aaron’s nonfiction writing.

Next we talk to Ben Cohen, cofounder of Ben & Jerry’s.

After disrupting a Senate testimony from RFK Jr. to protest US funding of weapons for Israel’s mass assault on Gaza, he was hauled out by police and arrested. He explains why he did it:

Everybody has their breaking point. I was reading about the slaughter of all these innocent children in Gaza. And then I read another article in the paper about another outbreak of lead poisoning in Milwaukee. Lead poisoning creates irreversible brain damage and there's nothing you can do about it.

And we know how to prevent it! It's chipping lead paint and lead in plumbing pipes and we could fix it, for a minuscule five percent of the Pentagon budget!

And so those two things: we’re making a conscious decision to provide the bombs as a gift to Israel that they use to kill kids in Gaza. And we're kicking kids off Medicaid and not preventing lead poisoning, an easily preventable permanent disease.

So I said, I’ve got to make my voice heard. I’ve got to take the most serious action that a citizen can take, which is an act of civil disobedience. And so that's what I did.

Joining forces with Palestinians and allies in the struggle against Zionism

Vienna, June 13-15th, 2025

Support the Call: https://www.juedisch-antizionistisch.at/en/congress

Get your Ticket: https://www.juedisch-antizionistisch.at/en/tickets

The world watches in horror the unfolding genocide against the Palestinian people committed by Zionism in partnership with the West. It is our duty to take action, as this is done in our name. We must join our Palestinian brothers and sisters in their darkest hour, and work for freeing and decolonising Palestine! To achieve this just aim, we must have progressive organisations and individuals across the world with us, working against Zionist Apartheid, ethnic cleansing and genocide as the last devastating evidence of colonialism which must be terminated.

Jews and people of Jewish descent everywhere - those whom the Zionist state claims to speak for – are uniting to declare their unwavering opposition to Zionism.

Since the First Zionist Congress over a century ago, Zionism claimed to speak on behalf of all Jews, while permanently attempting to silence our opposition to its constant crimes. Jewish tradition, history and culture is totally opposed to genocide.

The impressive history of Jewish resistance to Zionism is as long as Zionism – it included religious communities as well as secular movements of Jewish descent, and the vehement Jewish opposition to the creation of the Zionist state in Palestine itself.

Zionism is a crime against Judaism and the indigenous people of Palestine, and we are committed to putting an end to it. Over the years, it became clear that Zionism, instead of protecting Jews, placed them in great danger by committing atrocious acts in their name. Zionism is based on racial supremacy, adopting the very racist assumptions which are inherent to antisemitism – describing Jews as belonging to some chosen race – a notion which is fundamentally racist and which has no relation to Judaism.

The Zionist settler-colonial entity denies Palestinians their most basic rights. Zionism operates through colonialism, apartheid, ethnic-cleansing and genocide in Palestine Even before 1948. Fourteen million Palestinians worldwide are its direct victims. To Israel we firmly declare “Not in Our Name!” We are devoted to terminating Zionism and we are devoted to the decolonisation of Palestine under Palestinian leadership!

Above all, Zionism is a crime against humanity. Dedicated to the oath of the survivors of Mauthausen concentration camp, handed down to us as testimony of resistance against Nazi fascism, we follow their universal legacy and reiterate their message: “The permanence in the camp, lasting years, has reinforced in our minds the knowledge of the value of brotherhood among the people of all nations. True to these ideals, we make a solemn oath to continue to fight, firm and united, against imperialism and against the instigation of hatred between peoples.”

Together we will join forces at the first Jewish Anti-Zionist Congress and united we will join the Palestinians in liberating Palestine, and building a democratic, just and equal society for all!

People of all backgrounds are invited.^[[1] https://www.juedisch-antizionistisch.at/en]

Video Description:

Two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot and killed on Wednesday evening by a man who yelled “Free Palestine.” The man allegedly wrote a manifesto, and it isn’t clear yet what his motives are, his mental state, if he was a lone actor, or as our guest today puts it: “crazy.”

Useful Idiots: Let's start with the top news in the US: the shooting of two Israeli embassy officials outside an event in Washington, DC. What we know so far is that the alleged shooter chanted Free Palestine. There's also a manifesto that's been purported to be written by him, although we haven't confirmed that. With so much going on in Gaza, atrocities day by day, it feels a little inhuman to talk about two deaths in Washington when there's thousands of deaths going on in Gaza. But what is your reaction?

Norman Finkelstein: Well, my first reaction is that you have to have the facts and make a careful evaluation on the basis of the facts. When I first read about it this morning, I thought it had occurred at the Israeli consulate. And I assumed it was a Palestinian who had committed the action. And my first reaction was to remember the [Polish Jewish] fellow Herschel Grynszpan, who assassinated the second-level diplomat in the German legation in Paris in 1938.

He reacted in sheer horror at what was being done to the Jews. And he did an act. Of course, the Germans called it an act of terrorism, and that's what triggered Kristallnacht. I'm not aware of any [historians] who condemned him for the act, even though you could say it was not a very smart thing to do because it triggered Kristallnacht.

So that was my initial reaction. But then that turned out to be wrong because of two things. It didn't occur in the Israeli consulate. It occurred in front of a Jewish museum in Washington. And secondly, it's unclear at this point whether the alleged perpetrator was even aware that these two people worked in the Israeli consulate. So that throws a large number of variables into the equation. There seems to be this big disconnect between a sophisticated manifesto and a fellow just going randomly in front of a Jewish museum in Washington and attempting to assassinate two people who presumably he thought were Jewish.

So everything remains foggy now. I would say for me, the bottom line is it could have been a nutty guy. That's always possible. It could be a smart guy with a crazy project. It could be a crazy guy with a crazy project.

Subscribe to hear the full interview with Norman Finkelstein – 50 MINUTES longer. Norman reveals the “main enabler” of the genocide, calls out the New York Times for its coverage of the Israeli embassy shooting, discusses his debate with “that thing called Destiny,” and gives his prediction for how quickly Israeli crimes will be forgotten.

Generated Summary:

Main Topic: The video features Norman Finkelstein discussing the shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington D.C., the media coverage surrounding it, and the broader context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly the situation in Gaza.

Key Points:

  • Initial Reaction to Shooting: Finkelstein initially thought the shooting occurred at the Israeli consulate and was perpetrated by a Palestinian, drawing a parallel to Herschel Grynszpan. However, he later learned it occurred at a Jewish museum and the shooter's motives were unclear.
  • Shooter's Motives and Manifesto: The shooter allegedly chanted "Free Palestine" and may have written a sophisticated manifesto, creating a disconnect with the seemingly random nature of the attack.
  • Media Coverage Disparity: The hosts and Finkelstein criticize the disproportionate media coverage of the embassy shooting compared to the ongoing deaths and atrocities in Gaza, including malnutrition deaths and Israeli attacks.
  • ADL and Jonathan Greenblatt: The discussion touches on Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and his attempt to link the shooting to Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, accusing him of using "genocidal rhetoric."
  • Israeli Government's Response: The video highlights the Israeli government's blaming of Israeli Democratic Party leader Yair Golan for the shooting, due to his criticism of Israel's actions.
  • Broader Context of Israeli Society: Finkelstein discusses the current state of Israeli society, suggesting that the events of October 7th have unleashed previously repressed "demons" and allowed for the public espousal of hateful views. He contrasts this with Nazi Germany, noting that while Germans may have had some ignorance, Israelis are fully aware of the situation in Gaza.
  • Legitimacy of Israel: The discussion raises the question of whether Israel loses its legitimacy as a state due to its actions over the past 19 months.

Highlights:

  • Finkelstein's historical perspective, drawing parallels to Herschel Grynszpan and the US war with Japan.
  • The critique of media bias and the selective valuing of lives.
  • The discussion of the internal dynamics within Israeli society and the extent of public support for the actions in Gaza.
  • Randy Fine, a Florida congressman, suggesting nuking the whole Arab world.

Generated Summary of Video Below:

Introduction to Tony Greenstein

  • Tony Greenstein is introduced as the son of an orthodox Rabbi and a writer for various publications including The Guardian and Electronic Intifada.
  • He has authored significant works such as "Fighting Fascism in Brighton and the South Coast," and contributed to books on philosophy and ethics.
  • His notable book, "Zionism During the Holocaust: The Weaponization of Memory in the Service of State and Nation," is highly recommended by the host.

Recent Arrest and Political Climate

  • Tony discusses his recent arrest on December 20th, which was prompted by a tweet he posted that allegedly supported the prescribed organization Hamas.
  • He notes that the charges have since been adjusted but emphasize the use of anti-terrorism laws to suppress Palestinian support.
  • Tony highlights that this trend of using anti-terrorism laws is affecting many individuals who express solidarity with Palestinians, equating such support to terrorism.
  • He references a fellow activist, Haim Bashid Zubir, who faced similar consequences for his comments at a protest against the Israeli ambassador.

Details of Arrest and Charges

  • Tony reveals that he was arrested based on a tweet where he expressed support for Palestinians and mentioned Hamas as part of the Palestinian resistance.
  • He recalls making a controversial comparison between Israel and Nazi Germany during a protest, which led to accusations of racially aggravated offenses.
  • After eight hours in custody, he was released, and the police later informed him that they would not pursue charges related to the racially aggravated offense.
  • Tony is currently facing serious anti-terrorism charges, which could lead to a lengthy prison sentence, and he is awaiting further court proceedings.

Legal Context and Freedom of Speech

  • The conversation shifts to the legal context of free speech in the UK, where Tony notes the absence of a First Amendment equivalent.
  • He argues that even in the US, free speech is not absolute and is being increasingly restricted by court rulings.
  • Tony cites Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights as a supposed protection for free speech, but expresses skepticism about its enforcement in practice.
  • He critiques the role of police and courts in the UK, suggesting that they often act in alignment with the interests of those in power rather than upholding justice.

Discussion on Palestinian Treatment and Anti-Semitism

  • The discussion touches upon the treatment of Palestinians, particularly those without prominent platforms, and the challenges faced by Palestinian and Arab British individuals.
  • Tony mentions that in Germany, a significant number of individuals arrested under anti-Semitism laws are Jewish, highlighting the irony in the situation.
  • He argues that Jewish identity is often politicized, where those who do not support the state of Israel are rendered invisible and accused of contributing to anti-Semitism.

Katie talks to Chairman Omali Yeshitela, the founder of the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) and Uhuru Movement discusses why he and two other members of Uhuru have been convicted of conspiring to act as unregistered Russian agents, in an outrageous miscarriage of justice and a McCarthyite attack on free speech. Given that Joe Biden has pardoned his own son, something he promised not to do, he might as well pardon people who actually deserve it, like Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu Jamal, Julian Assange, and the Uhuru Movement members, including Omali Yeshitela.

Omali Yeshitela is the founder of the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) and Uhuru Movement. In 1968 Chairman Yeshitela founded The Burning Spear newspaper which is still published today. He has authored numerous articles, pamphlets and books. Chairman Omali made “reparations a household word” with the International Tribunal on Reparations for African People which was held in Brooklyn, New York in 1982, finding that African people are owed 4.1 trillion dollars for stolen labor in the U.S. alone. The Chairman founded the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement in 1991 as a revolutionary mass organization to defend the democratic rights of the African working class. Today, Chairman Omali Yeshitela, as the leader of the African Socialist International, speaks to his growing base around the world and leads the worldwide movement for the liberation of Africa and African people everywhere.

The International Criminal Court, or ICC, has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sacked defense minister Yoav Gallant and the Hamas Commander Mohammed Deif, in a move that is simultaneously being called unprecedented and long overdue.

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, has been a powerful force in bringing about these warrants and speaks to Piers Morgan about what they mean. Albanese has nothing but venomous condemnation for how these men have prosecuted their war against Hamas.

Then Piers turns to his panel, comprised of former IDF spokesperson Jonathan Conricus, author of 'The Racket' Matt Kennard, US defense lawyer Alan Dershowitz and host of 'The Katie Halper Show' and 'A Jew for a Ceasefire Now' Katie Halper.

Craig Mokhiber, former UN Official, joins Katie to discuss his recent article which details why Israel does NOT have the right to self defense and why Palestinians DO. Here is some of Craig's argument: "How many times have people who have followed what's happening in the Middle East heard this phrase?

'We believe Israel has a right to defend itself.' And that is usually a phrase which is delivered by Western politicians and spokespersons or government adjacent corporate media companies after Israel commits some massive war crime. So there'll be a massive slaughter, and then these people will be asked about it, and the first thing they'll say is, 'Well, Israel has a right to defend itself.'

I thought it was really important to unpack that, what I called the self defense because Israel does not have a right to defend itself in that way. As a matter of international law, as you said, this is a double lie. First, Israel does not have an article 51 right to self defense in the Gaza Strip, in the West Bank, in East Jerusalem, or in the Golan Heights.

And then secondly, The acts that they are trying to justify by saying that Israel has a right to self defense are not justifiable under international law. So even if self defense applied, those acts would still be crimes. So it's a double lie, in that sense. And this is clearly based upon international law.

I point out in the article is that while Israel does not have that right to self defense to make war on the occupied, territories, Palestinian people under international law do have a right. Palestinians have a right, to use armed force under international law."
