Just checking in with other cache owners. I have a virtual cache where the only requirement is to upload a photo at the spot. Recently, someone logged it but no photo. I messaged them and they complained I didn’t have an alternative way to log. They were with a large group as stated in their post, so I politely asked them to get a photo and update their log. I even updated the cache description to even more clearly state that uploading a photo was the only requirement. Several weeks has gone by so I have now deleted the log, citing the reason was missing the criteria and that they are welcome to log again with a photo. Just wanting to check if other COs have had this? I don’t want to be unfair, but when I log a cache, I always make sure I fulfill the requirements.

I released a trackable two years on Canada Day to celebrate our great country. Its goal is to travel to each capital city in Canada. This is clearly detailed on the trackable’s goal page.

The trackable was immediately picked up and taken to the US. (Ugh) It has been with the same person for two years, (Ugh!) and I ended up messaging him/her last year to see if it had been lost? It wasn’t, and I was promised it would move on soon…..and by soon, I guess that meant another year. (Uuugh!!)

Today I finally got a notification that it had been handed off to a new player who will be taking it across the globe to drop off in Scotland. (Gaaaah!!)

Part of me wants to message that person to ask them NOT to drop it off is Scotland, when its goal is to travel Canada. And another part of me just wants to let it be…..as we know, each player plays the game their own way.

What should I do?

Newbie as of 5/17. I’ve came across a few geocaches where either the container, the bag containing the log, and/or the log itself are broken, torn, etc. If I had extra paper, tiny plastic bags, and/or containers (say, empty medicine bottles) on hand, is it ok to use them to help preserve the geocache? I have replaced a bag for the log once because the geocache was inside a wet tree cavity and the bag was no good. Then I saw a comment somewhere in this sub recently that it is absolutely not okay to do things like that.

Hey there cachers!

I found my first ever geocache 7 years ago in Central Park while visiting NYC. I found about 4 that day and they were all in the south-most part of the park, I remember that it felt like I had really just scratched the surface as far as the amount I uncovered vs the amount that were actually available There were really a ton of them.

I am back in NYC 7 years later and wanted to do some geocaching in the park and was surprised to see that there are only 4 traditional caches in all of Central Park! One of which I had found 7 years ago (the rest I had found have been archived). The park is full of mystery caches, virtual caches and earth caches (not really my thing) but I was surprised that there were so few traditional caches.

Since I only really do geocaching when I am travel in manda therefore this is the first time that I am revisiting the same place for geocaching, I am wondering if anybody else has noticed this as a trend in geocaching? Are the traditional caches becoming rare and dwindling in numbers, or is this just a coincidence and bad timing? Are alternative caches types taking over the game?

Thanks!

Have you ever found any D5 traditional caches? If you have, what were they? I personally haven’t found a single one yet.

You often discover interesting places when caching. Be it old bunkers or some abandoned huts in the forest etc. Sometimes some places give me the creeps. My absolute horror scenario would be to find a corpse. I recently had a chat about this with a friend who also caches. He also finds the idea horrible. We wondered how often something like this has happened, where a cacher makes such a terrible discovery by chance.

Have you ever been very scared while caching or discovered something very strange?

I'm a little less than 2yrs into geocaching and I recently came across something I thought odd. The CO's cache description says that this is a "self-sustaining" cache and if you look for it and it's missing to just replace it. All of his hides have the same instruction.

I didn't think this was good "CO etiquette." Isn't the primary rule of being a CO to maintain your caches? Or does the CO's instruction in the description trump the rule? Asking because I'm still learning...

Mission 9: Tunnel of Light

This was my first time caching outside of the city of Seattle itself and I regret not doing it sooner. What a beautiful area. I chose to approach from the west instead of going through the 2.25 mile long dark tunnel. Although I definitely want to come back and try that approach next time. I'm also trying to find as many year 2000 caches as possible so I signed the log for the Iron Horse before heading home for the day.

If you're able to get here I highly recommend the trip.

Water on the way up

In the woods

View partway up

View from almost to the cache

Above the tunnel to reach Iron Horse

For some reason I have found this more and more annoying recently.

At one of my local caches, an experienced geocacher logged the find and wrote this accompanying comment, “ . . . we came to look for it today and couldn’t find it. As it was missing we will claim a find here because we spent ages looking in all the holes.”

So basically they said they couldn’t find it but then went on to log it as found regardless. This geocacher has over 5200 finds recorded on their profile but I now wonder how many of those they did actually find. It’s my understanding that geocaching is not just a matter of being in the vicinity of the cache site - you're supposed to actually find it and sign the log in order to claim it as a find.

At another local cache I logged a DNF recently and requested owner maintenance – after which they archived the cache almost straight away. Looking back on the logs there were about 12 previous, consecutive visitors, over a six month period, all of whom logged it as found, despite writing in their comments (some more explicitly than others) that the cache wasn’t actually there.

So it appears that this behaviour is widespread.

I have about 1900 logs and about 170 DNFs – that’s about 9% of caches that I’ve tried to find have been DNFs. But I now wonder if I’m the only one doing this. Yes, I’ve heard the arguments about it not being all about the numbers; you’re only cheating yourself; play your own game; etc etc, but I find it very annoying. Why do people do this – what is their motivation? Not only will this lying affect their find count but will also affect any challenges, streaks etc that they may be partaking in. If this is widespread then we can no longer believe any of these reported figures any more.

I suppose there is a difference between not logging anything if you didn’t find it (i.e. not recording a DNF) and logging it as a find when it was obviously a DNF. (the latter feels more deceitful) If they didn’t actually find it then they could at least just write a note or not write anything, rather than just lying.

I view DNFs as a way of recording what happened, proving useful information to the cache owner and to future visitors, and just generally helping the local caching community. And on a similar theme, why are people so reluctant to flag caches for owner attention? If my DNF log follows a consecutive series of about 3 or 4 previous DNFs, then I will also flag it for owner attention so they can sort it, or, if they fail to do so, the local reviewer will eventually archive it. I see this as a way of clearing up the local map and getting rid of all those historical caches that are almost certainly not there anymore. But again, I hardly ever see anybody else doing this. Surely this functionally would not be available if it wasn’t intended to be used by geocachers?

OK rant over – maybe I’m just being unreasonable but hopefully I’m not alone in having this opinion and playing the game in this way.

Hey everyone! I just got 8 of the caches I hid last week published this morning. Unfortunately, one cache didn’t get published, and I’m working on solving the problem right now.

I actually hid more caches in three days than have been hidden in the last two years in my county!

I’m really excited and curious to see who will get the FTFs and when. Since the caches are spread out over a pretty big area, it might be different cachers finding them.

So, let the FTF hunt begin!

My daughter and her friend were doing some geocaching today and I’m trying to figure out what exactly happened. Cache #1 My daughter and her friend both logged it. Someone messaged her friend and said “You both aren’t safe”. They were both obviously creeped out and left that area and found a second cache nearby, didn’t log it this time, but got a message that said “Classic lamp post cache got to love it”. At this point they had enough and went into a store and both parents came and picked up the kids.

We reported the user, but trying to figure out how this user would have identified my daughter’s friend as the particular user on the app. Supposedly according to the website the user hasn’t been on since 3/2024. Obviously the website is wrong.
