I remember people here saying that back when Geocaching was a new and very niche hobby the swag was of higher value and quality. Some people complain that when Geocaching became widespread, the quality of many swag declined with trash items being more common. How true is this? Does anyone here remember what the swag used to look like 10 or 20 years ago?

A big pet peeve of mine when it comes to caching: While to cache is taken care of and the owner updates it regulary, the place is absolutely filthy. I hate it when you have to double check if it's the cache or a piece of trash, especially when it's in a field or a forest and out of place. I think for the future I will just keep a trash bag with me. But I also encourage cache owners to make sure you don't have to dig through trash to find a cache.

Edit: and of course, assuming it's cachers littering the place: Please do not???

I am fairly new to the geocaching world and want to make sure I don't go against norms that a newbie wouldn't know. I gave been going for fairly easy caches to get my feet wet but want to try for some more difficult ones. The other day I couldn't find a cache. Was it missing, was it there and I just couldn't find it, I don't know. But I mark it Did Not Find and got the sad face. Womp comp. However, the next day the cache was disabled with the reasoning that it was marked DNF and the mod wanted the CO to check that it was still there. So my question: is it "ok" to mark DNF so I can keep track of the caches that bested me and maybe return or should I just make a note on the online log. I would be seriously irritated if one of my caches got deactivated bc a newbie without great skills couldn't find it. What's the best thing to do here?

Hey fellow geocachers! I’m curious to hear your stories — what’s the strangest, funniest, or most unexpected item you’ve ever come across inside a geocache?

And on the flip side: what’s the weirdest thing you have ever left in a cache for others to find?

Whether it made you laugh, cringe, or just go “what the heck is this?”, I’d love to know. Photos are welcome too if you’ve got them!

What are the differences between the two?

I just recently purchased a trackable and two travel bugs, but while shopping on the geo site and also lurking this sub, I realized that they are not necessarily the same thing. I have yet to let any of them go into the wild, but I do plan to eventually, I just want to do so correctly.

Can someone pls explain the differences like I’m 5? Or give me any tips or advice?

Today I reached one of my two goals for 2025: To reach 1000 years of loneliness.

"Lonely" means a cache that has not been found or had owner maintenance for over 180 days.

I reached 1000 years in 822 lonely cache finds.

I keep track of my 1 year+ lonely finds as well, but I'm only at 677 years with 371 of those. Someday...

Okay let's get the obvious answer out of the way: if you log caches around the world as found from the comfort of your home without ever visiting the place, then yes, that would be considered cheating by (I would like to think) everyone.

Also, in this thread I kind of assume that everyone shares the idea that a find = your name in log book.

But let's think of a couple of different scenarios which aren't so clear (I personally don't think the following scenarios can be unambigiously considered cheating):

  1. Is it cheating if you don't write your name on the log yourself?

This scenario includes, for example: Geocaching as a large group where one person finds the cache and writes everyone's names on the log book and then everyone logs the cache as found.

Another scenario could be that there is a difficult cache which requires climbing for example. Someone else climbs the tree, writes your name on the log and you log the find.

  1. Is it cheating to tag along with someone who has solved mystery caches by themselves?

In this scenario you have a friend who really has an eye for mystery caches. They can solve even the most insane 5.0 difficulty mysteries and practically can read the CO's mind. They do the mystery solving and you just tag along to sign the log.

  1. To stay on the topic of mystery caches: is it cheating to use any means neccessary to solve a mystery cache?

Let's say a mystery cache requires you to solve difficult mathematical problems. Instead of spending your precious time to solve the problem you ask ChatGPT to solve the said problem. A.I. does the solving, hands you the coordinates and you go sign the log.

  1. Is it cheating to figure out a multi-caches final coordinates without ever visiting the previous waypoints?

Let's say you can figure out the final location of a two-step multi-cache by using Google Street View or another tool (digital or not). So you just skip going to the given waypoint and just head on to the final location to sign the log.

Now, someone might ask: who cares? Let everyone play the way they want. My answer: I don't care how people play. But I would like to hear peoples' opinions. I'm too awkward to attend real life meetings of Geocachers so the best way to get peoples' views is through Reddit.

Share your thoughts. Bring up more scenarios that might be on some sort of a gray area. It would also be interesting to hear thoughts from someone who thinks that it is not possible to cheat in Geocaching.

I was a FTF on a cache. I only have 61 finds, so a bit of a "newbie" even though I have been playing since 2004 with my dad.

I found a brand new cache, posted a FTF and signed the physical log. A couple people after me with thousands of finds could not find it. The CO removed my log and claimed I didnt sign the sheet. I messaged them and said I absolutely did sign, and could send photos. He replied he would, "check the log".

I resigned the app log, and he posted maintenance as, "all is good here".

Well fhe big accounts went back and found the log, and then claimed I was not the FTF on the app. I went back to the cache, and turns out, the CO replaced the physical log.

My question is WHY. I'm tempted to steal the cache since I never found it anyway.

EtA: I won't actually steal the cache. But I want to because I'm mad. That's all.
