I've been using the Framework 13 with Ubuntu as a daily driver for over 4 months now (I'm a test automation engineer). I had taken some notes on lots of daily use aspects, so that's what this review is focused on. (Nothing's broken so far)

If you just want an idea of what it's like to use this device professionaly on a daily basis, this may interest you!

TLDR: I'm happy with it, but there's a bunch of quirks that you'll have to accept. I do, because the annoyances of Microsoft, Apple & Co. are much greater to me. :-)

Got this laptop brand-new today, played some 1080p YouTube videos earlier but had noticed it getting uncomfortably hot beforehand so I've put it on my table.

I've just been browsing static sites for the past ~30 minutes, nothing in the background. Installed fw-fanctrl to run the fans at 100% all the time. CPU is currently at 65C, just touched the bottom of the laptop and it is hot enough to make my reflexes pull my hand away. This could easily cook food. Is this normal?

I sold my Framework 16 on eBay, and the buyer wanted to return it. It came back to me completely disassembled, bent components, a stick of RAM missing, broken ribbon cables etc. eBay is giving me issues on my end, since they seem to side with buyer most of the time. The laptop is unusable as it is, unfortunately I would need to replace nearly every component to get it back in good shape again. Does anyone have any suggestions, or happen to be interested in buying a beat up 16?

I don't know if I'm going to get it, but I found a charger that ACTUALLY does 240W on one port (and it's not that Digikey one with the attached cable)! It's admittedly a hefty boy, not super portable, but finally 240W charging in a product that's actually accessible to consumers!

It's on sale for $200 for not-prime day. Let me know if you get it and what you think of it!

Shoutout to @lbkNhubert for pointing me in the right direction: https://community.frame.work/t/workaround-for-missing-biometrics/68869/9?u=chazb0t

I bought a handful of fingerprint readers from Amazon to try and find a working one:

This is the correct one, the Color: B model (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DT4DQGW2) with the Chipsailing CS9711 fingerprint reader (lsusb listed as 2541:0236).

I'm thinking about replacing my ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (Ryzen 7 Pro, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB) with a Framework laptop. I was originally considering a MacBook Pro 14" but I'm not sure I’d really make the most of it to justify the price, plus the lack of repair. I mostly do light development work in VSCode and some occasional editing in Affinity, nothing super intense.

Right now I'm torn between the Framework 12 and the Framework 13, but leaning toward the 12 since the 2-in-1 functionality might let me stop carrying around a separate iPad. I'm mainly looking for something that performs well enough for my needs, has better battery life than the 3.5 hours I get on my T14, and will hold up over time.

If anyone here already has the Framework 12, I’d really appreciate hearing how it’s been in terms of battery life and performance. Do you feel it’s solid for light dev and creative work? And would you pick it again over the 13?

Thinking about buying and was curious what distros owners enjoy on their laptops.

I wish they had an option for certain distros to be pre-installed as a build option.

Hey there! I'm Alvaro, from Chile. I'm an Android Developer and I usually work with a Mac (from the company I work for). For personal projects I use my PC (i5 13600, RTX 4070 Super). It works very well for games and my personal coding projects, but I would like to buy a laptop, since I got a Starlink and want to do some overlanding (Chile has loooots of mountains).

I was reading about the Asus Rog Flow Z13, that comes with an AI cpu, but it is a very expensive, and probably not enough good for the price. Then I found framework and was "Wait what, this is amazing". Problem is that I was in the Intel side of life for too much years now and I don't understand all this Ryzen things.

I would like to know if you could help me to understand the different processors available for Framework and compare it with the one on the Asus Flow Z13 if it is possible.

I'm looking the Framework 12, since I think the 16 is too big for my on the move purposes.

thanks for your comments!!

PS: I prefer the DIY way, and will use it with Arch Linux, if it is important
