A few days ago we announced that because we link to communities containing material regulated by UK's Online Safety Act (OSA), the act would require us to implement age verification, a burden we cannot take on. In response we made the difficult choice to block UK IP addresses from accessing the login and registration pages.

France's Sécurité et Régulation de l'Espace Numérique Act (SREN) essentially would require us to do the same, and therefore we have also, much to our chagrin, restricted France IP addresses from accessing the login and registration pages as well.

This contains important information regarding access to feddit.online, particularly for our users in the United Kingdom.

Effective yesterday, July 25, 2025, the UK's Online Safety Act (OSA) came into force. This legislation has necessitated significant changes to how we can provide access to our platform for users in the United Kingdom, and these changes are now reflected in our updated Terms of Service at https://feddit.online/terms-of-service.

While Feddit.online does not host NSFW (Not Safe For Work) communities directly, we recognize that our members may encounter or link to such content on external platforms. Our existing Terms of Service require all users to be at least 16 years old.

However, the UK Online Safety Act broadly applies to internet services accessible from the UK, imposing stringent requirements on platforms that facilitate access to certain content, including pornography without regard to the number of users served by the service. Specifically, the law mandates that we implement highly effective age verification procedures and restrict access to such content for any UK user who cannot verify they are 18 years or older.

While it is not feasible for us to implement such a thing, even if we could, we would never implement such privacy-invasive actions.

Consequently, for as long as the UK Online Safety Act remains in effect, we regret that we are unable to permit users from the United Kingdom to access this instance. We have therefore implemented technical measures to prevent both new registrations and logins from UK IP addresses. We understand this news will be disappointing to our UK community members, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Finally, we'd like to address a common question regarding the use of VPN services. Feddit.online currently has no restrictions on accessing the platform via a VPN. Please note, however, that this policy does not constitute an endorsement or advocacy for individuals in the UK to circumvent their country's laws. It is simply our policy from the beginning.

I've noticed that, on feddit.online, some communities have posts pinned that are not pinned on the original server. I'm assuming that the "unpin" notification didn't make it to this server.

What would be a good way of handling that? Should we just post here asking for those to be unpinned? Can we become a moderator with very limited abilities, only having the ability to remove a pin? It only seems to happen once every few months, so it's not that big of a problem.

Ones that I just noticed today in https://feddit.online/c/comicbooks@lemmy.world:

I like the new icon (to be honest, I can’t really see it, but from what I can see it looks nice). Who drew it?

6

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find info on new user restrictions or time limits, so I thought I'd ask here.

I noticed my comments always show 1-upvote, even after some time passes. Is this a new-user restriction, or are votes being cast but not displayed? Personally, I don't care about points, but I use votes as feedback to gauge whether my contributions are relevant. I also noticed fewer replies to my comments than I'd expect, given my experience on the previous instance. Is this a visibility thing for new accounts, or just coincidence? I'm here to chat, so I'd love to hear from others!

Thanks for running this instance. I know it's not easy to run or mod. I hope this can help other newcomers, as well!

I made this post on piefed.social and was told one of the things I'm looking for could be here, so would there be any problem if I create a community here where only content in spanish is allowed?

When creating this post, I have a bunch of markdown options, but when I reply to someone, or comment on a post, I only have a text box available.

Should I be able to put images in there somehow? Or is that functionality not available in Piefed?

Let me know if there is a better spot for me to ask this! I tried searching, but couldn't find anything already addressing it

Yesterday I deployed the latest Piefed software and overnight the server ran out of memory and fell about 8 hours behind. After restarting, memory began consuming at an alarming rate. I scaled the server up, but when I restarted, the server wasn't processing any incoming data but throwing 502 (Internal Server Errors).

I restored the server from a back-up I made on Saturday (Database is NOT affected and is still up-to-date). Now it's back to working. HOWEVER, all the incoming posts for about 8 hours are missing. I don't know if it's due to the restore, or they were just tossed when they came in due to the problem that was happening.

So, apologies for losing 8 hours of incoming posts. I've reached out to the developers for next steps.

Once everything works with the latest code, I'll scale the server back down to the size it was before.

I know this can't be definitively answered with certainty (heck, maybe the IT dept just doesn't like feddit lol), I was moreso just curious to know if a bored wizard had any clarifying explanation on the matter.

If context/details are helpful (not doxxing myself obvs) I work for a fortune 100 corpo logistics company based in Pittsburg that is def not UPS or DHL lol

I'm so puzzled by what is and isn't blocked at my work. Youtube = fine ; chess.com = risk and blocked b/c game
piefed = fine ; feddit.online = risk and blocked because PUP potential ; reddit = fine

Is our IT terrible or is this the case for most corpos that cheap out on such things?

2025-Mar-14: I scaled up the DB cluster from regular SSD drives to nVME drives, and moved from regular Intel CPUs to Premium AMD CPUs. nVME is significantly faster in all metrics than regular SSD drives. The improvement should be significant.

The load values are much lower than they were before, so, so far, so good.

Please let me know if you notice any issues.

I'm seeing signs that the DB Cluster is struggling at times and during peak activity it may become a bottleneck. The application server is cruising.

This evening, I'm going to scale up the DB cluster from regular SSD drives to nVME drives, and move from regular Intel CPUs to Premium AMD CPUs. nVME is significantly faster in all metrics than regular SSD drives. The improvement should be significant.

There shouldn't be any downtime unless something goes wrong.

Seems as if the greentext community was mistakenly placed into the Environment topic due to the term "green" being in the community name.

"Green text" refers to the colour of text in 4chan posts that's used when users are telling stories that supposedly happened to them, often being comedic in nature. It would most likely instead fall under the Humour and Comics topic.

It seems that at about 16:14 UTC, Wasabi, which we use for storing images, began having problems in both their us-east-1 and us-east-2 regions. We use us-east-1. The problems have been happening for a number of hours. While us-east-2 is back up, according to their status, https://status.wasabi.sys/, us-east-1 remains problematic due to a power outage.

The last update at 19:59 UTC: Update - Power has been fully restored to the us-east-2 region. We are continuing the process of restoration to the us-east-1 region and will update this page as we have more information.

15

Although I haven't seen issues on feddit.online (you may have), this server uses Wasabi S3 for image storage, and they are having problems with their S3 service. You may see image problems. Their status can be monitored at https://status.wasabi.com/

Apologies for the approximate 45-minute outage. The database maintenance on https://feddit.online/ is now completed.

21

There is a database repair that must be performed. It's safest that this be done when nothing else is using the database.

I currently plan to start around 9:15 AM EST (14:15 UTC), but I could start sooner or later than this.

Frankly, I have no idea how long the repair will take. Maybe an hour? It ran 3 hours on piefed.social. I expect it to take less time here since we're a newer instance and have less historical data.

There will be a maintenance screen for the duration of the outage.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Jerry

I just added 101 most active remote communities to https://feddit.online/ based on lemmyverse.net that are not already in the database. I filtered out NSFW, suspicious communities, and selected only English and Spanish/Portuguese communities. Everyone is encouraged to add any remote communities they want. All languages are good.

I added another 75 remote communities to https://feddit.online/ that are the most active, according to lemiverse.net, and that were not already here. I excluded NSFW and suspicious communities, although one NSFW came in because it wasn't properly flagged. It's flagged NSFW here now. Only English and Spanish language communities were selected.

Anyone can add, and is encouraged to add, remote communities of any language.
