Pretty self explanatory, been learning Italian for awhile (1.5 years) and would like to practice with someone who is learning English or just wouldn’t mind having random conversations with an American from Ohio haha.

Just looking to see what’s out there

I was putting up some wall decorations earlier today and was painstakingly realigning everything until it looked level to my eyes. It might be just a hair off, but if I don't correct it, I'll see the misalignment almost instantly and get bothered for the rest of time until I fix it. Has anyone investigated, or is there literature on the minimum perceptible angle from level to the naked eye?

Do they ever look at the sky for any reason, other than maybe watching out for the Albatroses ?

If an employer wanted to do a background check what would be the limits? Like would they have access to your medical history? and if so as someone with ASPD this would be a huge problem.

I work in entertainment so it wouldn't really affect anything but still. Being a literal sociopath isn't a good look. That's why I haven't told anyone irl. It wouldn't look good to an employer. Could it hold me back? And if so is there anyway I can withhold such information?

I saw this Lemmy post, but a huge list of games with no discussion isn't very interesting! Let's talk about why the games that influenced us had such a big impact - how they affected us as people.

For me, it was the PC game Creatures. It's a life simulation game featuring cute little beings called 'Norns' which you raise and teach.

You can almost think of it like a much cuter predecessor to The Sims, but which claimed to actually "simulate" their brains.

As a thirteen-year-old it was the first game that made me want to go online and seek out more info. What I discovered was a community of similar-interest nerds hanging out on IRC chat, and it felt like for the first time in my life I had "found my people" - others who weren't just friends, but whom I really resonated with.

I learned web development (PHP at the time!) so I could make a site for the game, which became the foundation for my job in software engineering.

And through that group I also discovered the Furry community, which was a wild ride in itself.

So yeah, Creatures. Without that game, I think I'd have become quite a different person.

Of the following, which of the two personality types do you generally align with?

When approaching a given situation or idea, do you typically focus on details first, or start with the bigger picture, filling in details second?

Edit for clarity: I'm not asking anyone to strictly identify with one or the other. It's a question of where on the spectrum between them you fall.

I am more of a big picture person and my partner is more of a details first person.

I do. The is “el/la” and a is “un/una”.

In my dad’s language and my second language, it’s “the” and “a”

I blocked a lot of political keywords, so I am genuinely asking because I might be ill informed. What concrete actions have the Democrats taken to block, stop, or reverse Trumps illegal actions?

Again, I am genuinely asking.

Hey guys one of the things I miss about reddit is communities like r/Conservative or r/conspiracy, not because I agree with really anything they say there, but because it's a challenge for me.

It's really easy to say "no you're dumb and wrong", but I like going down rabbit holes so I will take the bat shit insane stuff they say and find actual sources to refute them. I know it won't actually change any minds but it's fun for me.

I know theres @[email protected] but that is basically just non-conservatives making fun of conservatives. And I have not been able to find any good conspiracy theory communities on Lemmy at all.

Any advice?

Is it douchey to wear shades inside, even if you're only going to be in for a few minutes?

How would dimming the sun over one Island help fight climate change? How would they prevent these particles from traveling and dimming the sun in areas that don't want the sun dimmed? If we can dim the sun in a specific area why would you do it over a populated area that already has problems with Vitamin D deficiency and stereotypically is one of the least sunny population areas of the world? Why wouldn't you do it over the pacific where there isn't a population, there is more solar heating per area, and not negatively impact crop yields or health?

My own opinion is that there is a budget for political will to handle climate change and by impacting people you are exhausting political will. So why wouldn't you modify an approach in a way that would be more effective and not exhaust that political will?

Part of the problem is doing things like this over UK just feeds conspiracy theorists that say things like, "You are the carbon they are trying to eliminate." When you target population centers and arable land people immediately ask "Why are you doing this to me?" That's just where their mind immediately goes. So then why not find adjustments that give you the same or better impact without feeding conspiracy theories?

Most of the planet is not populated, so if you are doing it over a population center it starts to look a lot like targeting that population rather than the environment. Looks matter. Because next thing you know people are getting paranoid and opposing everything you want to do with climate change.

So does anyone have a good explanation for why solar dimming over the UK is a good idea?

I'm at a bit of a crossroads and discouraged at the moment with how job prospects are going. Trying to figure out what to do next.

I've worked at a call centre for the last 11 years for a government healthcare provider. I started there when I was a teenager as one of the people on the phones, but worked my way up to a monitor position within a few years where I listen to other people's calls and provide coaching. I also have duties in operational support with the team where I do timekeeping, scheduling, supervise shifts, and some data analysis. I am highly skilled with databases and Excel.

The job has been fine, but I basically reached the highest role I could have on the team many years ago. I'm also only listed as a casual employee in my job despite working full time hours. This fact was a point of investigation in the department as I was looking after many crucial tasks despite being a casual employee, but they determined my duties were still in scope for my position.

Without going into too many specifics, my manager has continuously made it clear that there wouldn't be more opportunities for me to advance at the company despite my strong performance. Main reason being that higher roles are already filled by long serving employees who have given no indication they will be leaving any time soon. So I have been looking to leave the company for a long time as I'm frustrated being a casual employee for so long.

I decided reduce my hours and go back to school in 2020 to improve my job prospects. I ended up staying in school for 4 years and completing a BBA with a major in supply chain management. During this time I also married my wife and we had a daughter in my last semester at school.

At the end of my degree, I got a job with a national railway company working as a dispatcher in their operations centre. They liked my experience working on phones and my education. This was the permanent position I was looking for with benefits and only a slight hit in pay. The role was shift work though with day and night shifts. They would schedule me on whatever shifts they needed and many days I would go home to sleep for 8 hours and head back to work another shift. The job was very stressful and they were short staffed, meaning overtime was forced frequently and you could end up working 16 hours straight.

All my colleagues there were basically giving me advice or strong hints that I should get out while I can. Being incredibly burned out and not seeing my wife or new baby for days on end, I decided to leave and go back to my original job where I could technically make more money and work more consistent hours during the day.

This was the right decision for my family and I don't regret leaving. I've been able to help my wife with raising our daughter and I have gotten to spend a lot more time with them that I would've missed out on.

My plan with going back to my old company was to work there for a few months while applying for other jobs again and move into a different role somewhere else. This was in June 2024 and it has been over a year now since I made this change, but I am still at my old job.

The first month I landed two intervews that I felt I did fine on, but didn't receive any offers. I kept applying for roles, but things seemed to dry up quickly. The last 11 months I had two other applications where I made it to multiple interviews and felt like I as a really strong applicant, but ultimately someone else was chosen. I have applied for over 100 jobs in the last 12 months now and I'm still stuck where I am. I usually apply for operations supervisor or coordinator roles. I would like to grow into a project manager role or a not for profit company job, but I'm not targeting those roles this early in my career.

I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. I apply when I can, but being a parent and working, I don't always have time everyday. I make tailored resumes and write cover letters. Sometimes I'll use AI to help write the cover letters faster, but I'll always adjust them to be more natural and better fit the posting. I apply, apply, and apply and I hear nothing most of the time. Sometimes I wonder if I was put on a blacklist since I left my railway job pretty abrubtly, but I felt like it was on fine terms, and it seems absurd that such a thing would exitst.

I'm lucky that my wife has a great job and provides us benefits, but I need a better job with better pay and benefits to provide a better life for my kids.

I'm wondering if I should pivot industries or pursue training in a different field. I wouldn't say I'm particularly career picky or feel that I am too good for certain roles. I know a lot of people define themselves by their career, but I really don't need a glamorous career. I would be open to anything at paid 60k-100k or more with benefits and had reasonable working hours and time off.

I'm wondering what industries or roles are lucrative or have opportunities that people are seeing? Is there training that would be worthwhile to aquire? I also hear about people getting reached out to by recruiters all the time, but that never happens to me despite being on Linkedin and such. I really just feel I need to reorient myself, I'm just looking for where I should be looking for opportunities.

An argument can be made that all actions people take are for their own self-interest. Even things like helping the community is done for reciprocal benefits for yourself plus the general increase in respect.

Another point is that if all people just act for their own self-interest, they will have a better life themselves, and if everyone does the same, some sort of proper balance will be achieved.

I have been having some occasional discussions with my friends over this. I personally disagree, but would love to hear what others have to say. Feel free to discuss!

I wonder what causes people who once thought they’d spend their life together to not want to do that anymore.

Has your partner changed? Or did they not change when you expected them to? Have you changed?

Have you not noticed each others’ flaws when love was young and the pink glasses still worked and only discovered them later?

And what can your experience teach us about our own relationships?

I'm moving soon and I've 0 instinct for that, so looking for help and ideas :)
