There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

Hi y'all! I hope you guys are doing well. So basically I am going through a lot right now. I just need some advice. The thing I am going through is the following and yes I copy pasted from reddit cause the advice there wasn't the best I'd say. I was hoping if you guys could help. Thanks in advance!

I’m feeling really stuck and could use some guidance. I have a CS degree and worked for 1.5 years at a major financial firm building data pipelines, working with financial datasets, and using technologies like Python, SQL, and AWS. I was put on a PIP earlier this year and eventually let go, so I started applying for jobs during that time and have now been unemployed for a few months. I’ve sent out 400+ applications with minimal callbacks, tailoring my resume to each and every job. The tech market is absolutely brutal right now with mass layoffs and companies choosing overseas teams over domestic engineers.

I’m at the point where I don’t even know what direction to go anymore. I’ve been considering pivoting to becoming an actuary since my background with financial data analysis seems relevant, and I’ve read that programming skills are increasingly valued in that field. The work seems like it would fit my analytical mindset and the career appears more stable than tech. However, when I looked into it more, I found conflicting information about how competitive the entry-level market actually is, and I’m not sure if I’d just be trading one oversaturated field for another.

I’ve also tried applying to healthcare IT roles and local banks and credit unions thinking they’d be less competitive than major tech companies, but even those seem incredibly hard to break into right now. I’m getting rejected from positions that should be a good fit for my background, which is making me question if there’s something fundamentally wrong with my approach or if every industry is just this broken.

The financial stress is getting to me, and I’m doing some gig work to survive, but I can’t keep this up much longer. I even considered joining the military, but I’ve been on antidepressants and would need to wait at least a year to be eligible.

Has anyone else made a successful pivot from software engineering to another field? Should I stick with trying to leverage my existing technical skills in adjacent industries, or is it worth investing time and money into studying for actuarial exams? I’m really struggling to figure out what my next move should be and would appreciate any advice or perspectives from people who’ve been in similar situations. Should I just grind hard on leetcode at this point for SWE jobs with how terrible the job market has been?

I’m honestly just feeling defeated and don’t know what path forward makes sense anymore. Any guidance would be really helpful

What are your favorite insane laptops?

Mine is the Dell Rugged: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F56ION4_n0

Bump and fall proof, liquid proof, sand proof (and cat hairs proof I assume), extreme heat/cold proof, can be used as a blunt weapon in an emergency. Ridiculously overkill for anyone that's not a geologist working in Antarctica or an archaeologist in the Gobi desert, and ridiculously overkill is fun

I'm asking because this has been a tip of my toungue issue for months. There is a particular comic from the same artist, where a guy is getting robbed and a cop comes to save them, but the cop shoots the guy getting robbed.

I tried asking all the regular comic book posters but no luck.

Then I saw the comic being used as a profile pic.

Does anyone recognize or know the comic artist?

Picture is my bookbag that I wore to the no kings day celebration in fort Walton Beach, Florida. There's little coverage of it so I thought it would worth blogging on the fediverse about it

Are they living too far away? Too poor to go there? Bots? Laziness? Are they not interested in military parades despite liking to denounce protesters?

What's the big reason?

I'm looking for a way to both keep track of the wines I try, and to find info on new wines. In particular, I'd like to be able to search by characteristics. And all without being tracked or nagged to pony up for the premium subscription. Thanks.

I think 3D geometry has a lot of quirks and has so many results that un_intuitively don't hold up. In the link I share a discussion with ChatGPT where I asked the following:

assume a plane defined by a point A=(x_0,y_0,z_0), and normal vector n=(a,b,c) which doesn't matter here, suppose a point P=(x,y,z) also sitting on the space R^3. Question is:
If H is a point on the plane such that (AH) is perpendicular to (PH), does it follow immediately that H is the projection of P on the plane ?

I suspected the answer is no before asking, but GPT gives the wrong answer "yes", then corrects it afterwards.

So Don't we need more education about the 3D space in highschools really? It shouldn't be that hard to recall such simple properties on the fly, even for the best knowledge retrieving tool at the moment.

I used to be in r/lonely and similar subs on reddit but I've been shadowbanned for no good reason.

Where can I find some people here to talk with me when things get rough?

Thanks :)

Intending to reach anyone here with some product or industrial design chops but anyone with an input is welcome. I spent the day looking at all of the components I want to fit into an audio amplifier. It is somewhere around the size of a typical router. My ideas thus far are ehh at best. I just abstracted the realization that this is an issue common to most electronics products, so who does it best or what ideas do you like most for shapes and design?

I'm going to run this as a poll by creating some responses you can upvote. If you wouldn't mind upvoting a an existing comment so we get get a really nice count. See the comments I'm Leaving to get an idea of how the poll works. Try to follow my comment structure, but add your own options if you really feel I'm missing something.

I really hope this works how I'm envisioning. I really want to get an idea of operating system and platform preference skew for Lemmy.

How to vote:

  1. Upvote the operating system you use
  2. Upvote how your download the app of choice

If you use a browser

  1. Find the "Browser" comment and upvote
  2. Upvote the browser you use

If you use multiple, feel free to upvote multiple

For anything that isn't a vote, please search for the "bump comment" and reply to that. I know this isn't exactly open ended, but I really wanted to pose this question to a community that didn't skew towards a specific topic. I hope that's ok with this community and the mods. I would love to discuss the results of this poll at some point. My goal is to collect those results in a way that informs that discussion so we're not all guessing how people use Lemmy.

Edit: because there is a troll downvoting comments randomly, you should look at just the upvotes, not the score, to get the correct poll results.

I have a Mitsubishi Electric "MSZ-GL06NA" and live in NYC.

Why does the heat pump never stop when set to the dehumidify mode?

The apartment just keeps getting colder and colder but never any drier(?).

When will it ever stop or Does it need servicing?
