I enjoyed season 1. It's by no means some high end story, but it's silly and comfortable. A nice watch when you're winding down before bed.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985), the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), and the series that made Gundam into a national phenomenon. Expect a whole lot of robots fighting each other and war melodrama resulting thereof, as a task force assigned to clean up the remnants of an evil empire turns evil itself. Still considered one of the best Gundam series of them all. Episodes 7 through 12 tonight.

After that is Chicken for Linda (2023), A French animated slice-of-life comedy about a single mother who tries to make up for being mean to her daughter by fulfilling her request for a chicken dinner. Uh-oh, the shops are all closed and she can’t cook. What’s she going to do? Hilarity ensues, in a beautiful watercolor style. This is the best-known and best-regarded work to date of directors Chiara Malta and Sebastien Laudenbach. Great reviews, so let’s check it out.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

The previous posts linked above have some discussions and glosses of other anime that might help you. The plot descriptions in these quizzes are based on those from Anilist, so you can use that site for reference. You can also use things like title structure, character names, and occasional numerals to help you figure things out, or you can ask me for hints like the meanings of individual words, and I may or may not provide. And just like last time, I'm also providing some hints right off the bat, which may or may not make this quiz way too easy (assuming this isn't too easy even without extra hints).

When you make a guess, please spoiler your answer. If you're right, I will reply with the Evangelion congratulations emoji and provide glosses.

Also, I can't guarantee that every translation is perfect, because despite inventing this language, it is still not my first language.

Some hints not specific to any title

Deciphering character namesThe lengths of names may be of use but don't expect them to perfectly match their lengths in Hepburn/English. Likewise initials might not always match the Hepburn.

Names are inflected with a masculine suffix -a and a feminine suffix -e, but to prevent hiatus these go through the following sound changes:

① {a(ː).V → Vː|V = any vowel} — as in *Sakura-eSakuré

② {O(ː).V → ø(ː)|O = round vowel} — as in *Tomoyo-eTomoyǒ, or *Kló-aKlő

③ {E(ː).V → jV(ː)|E = unrounded front vowel} — as in *Miyuki-aMiyukya

The sound change for front vowels may trigger further sound changes:

{Tj → TT|T = alveolar consonant} — but note that alveolar geminates are realized as palatals.

ji(ː) → iː

In that order.

Also note that proper nouns occasionally do not refer to characters, in which case the gender that the name is inflected as may not be of much use to you.

Other revelations about the grammar and word derivationIt has by this point been cracked or revealed that...

  1. -t́ forms verbs and -ćk forms active participles.
  2. -v is a suffix used to form the construct state. This means that the following word modifies or possesses the previous.

After that is Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure (1976), a surrealist feature from renowned auteur animator Richard Willians, the guy best-known for The Thief and the Cobbler (1992). This was the only feature-length work completed and released during Wiliams’ lifetime in a form that he intended. Accordingly, it has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, owing to its bizarre, yet fluid animation, structured around a threadbare plot that sees the eponymous living dolls rescuing a kidnapped toy from a pirate captain. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

Another month, another time to be exhausted by employment.

Manga

Nothing new! Just slowly reading new chapters of Shibuya Near Family and reading Full Metal Panic! Sigma at a glacial pace.

...but

Manhwa

Villains Are Destined to Die! - finally finding a second korean comic that is not in the wretched long strip format*, and it's a really good one. The isekai is interesting, the game mechanics actually feel like they add to the story instead of being there because gamers. The writing is shockingly excellent, with the story being unpredictable so far, and there is a sense that there something below the surface. Maybe I'll be disappointed yet (probably by the lack of John Browning tbh). but this is one of the best manga (oh wait) I've read in a while.

( * - idk if all the chapters so far are available as comic pages unfortunately)

Anime

Following Gundam G-Spam being mid, I have instead jumped onto two other series: Gundam Unicorn and Gundam SEED. I don't have high expectations, and so far both are... okay.

Dragon Ball Z is getting slow. But it's consistently good so far! Maybe I'll turn sour on it in a hundred episodes. Probably not.

Monogatari, oh boy. The show's source of deserved sordid reputation does rear its ugly head sometimes. Other times, it's an entertaining Shaft show, with all that entails. Bakemonogatari was pretty good, with Hitagi Senjougahara being the standout character, but the Kizumonogatari movies were genuinely very entertaining. Probably because I'm a member of a goth-adjacent subculture and I love vampire slop lol.

Before it released, I joked about CITY: The Animation being Nichijou 2... but it is Nichijou 2. I'll miss the original's characters, but this is very promising, based on episode 1.

You're Under Arrest! continues being shockingly entertaining. The show's main strength is the Patlabor style workplace shenanigans with the ensemble cast, as well as the reoccurring characters, which the author is surprisingly good at not forgetting about. Strike Man is a hyperchad.

Also a few shows I need to watch more of to mini-review.

Western Animation & Live Action

Evil triangle guy is the only thing I knew about Gravity Falls, and I have now reached them. The show is very fun so far. Stan's Quark for zoomer children.

Andor started kinda slow, but the heist episode was fantastic, and the quality is indeed as high as people claim it has. And season 2 is better? I'm looking forward to it. Even though I'm going through it slow, since I mostly watch it when it's pretty late and I don't have the energy to stay up that much anymore.
