Wow, very minimal difference in the pictures for being 2 weeks in.

I see it the same way. The Lemmy developers have made decisions based on their ideals, and PieFed looked at it and said "well, what if we had better ways of filtering out the bad stuff"? Some people don't think anything should be filtered out, but I disagree with them. Heck, even the Lemmy devs disagree, as they are absolutely the most heavy handed with bans on their instance. The modlog is wild and crazy.

Anyway, I've checked over the settings and this PieFed doesn't block much of anything, but there are still some nice little things that I like compared to Lemmy.

This sounds pretty fancy.

Commercial aircraft get their location from multiple places including GPS, ground based facilities (VOR's), IRS, etc. IRS is what I'm used to calling it, but it's the same as INS, which is what this article is talking about.

It determines location by keeping track of rotation, acceleration, etc. It's often called "dead reckoning" because it just gives the best guess, and you don't know how accurate it is. There are multiple of these devices on each aircraft, and they compare their locations to the other sources and if one is drifting way further than the rest, it gets ignored. That's a very basic explanation because how it really works is way above my knowledge level.

It's very cool how these devices find their location, though. When you first boot the system up, it spends about 5 minutes measuring the rotation of the Earth. For this reason, you can't reset it when in motion. Based on what it feels it can determine your exact location on the surface of the earth.

August 15th, 2025: Interesting

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts - w/Maggard 30mm Badger
  • Razor: Gold Dollar Straight Razor (8)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Santa Noir - Soap
  • Post Shave: Noble Otter - Hamami - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Dove - Men+Care Ultra-Hydra - Cream
  • Fragrance: Berceuse Parfum - Minneapolis 5.3 - EdP

Such an interesting and great shave. I'll have to experiment with this technique some more. I skipped WTG altogether, and pulled a @[email protected]. 2.5 passes (cleanup on the fat neck parts as per usual), and the first pass was against the grain mostly. It felt great, honestly, especially with my newfound low-angle technique.

This razor really surprises me sometimes. It shouldn't be this good. It's cheap (and inexpensive!), and the history of honing that I've done to it would make any expert blush.

No aftershave burn, but there are a couple of patches which my new technique missed.

Obligatory plug for https://wetshav.ing/ for anyone who wants to try PieFed, a Lemmy alternative.

Also, if you can see this you're probably all set, but I think some people are having some visibility problems because of language settings. Check your Lemmy account and make sure "English" and "Undetermined" are selected (hold Ctrl to select both of them).

This is most likely because of language settings, and I have to look into it I guess. Lemmy language is such a strange thing -- this Lemmy instance has had "undefined" as the only option for a long time. I changed it last night to include English as well...

Try checking your account settings and make sure English is selected. This is the default for new registrations (I think), but older registrations like us old timers have to manually enable it.

Yes, more and more apps are adding support. Summit and Boost also have support. For iOS I just saw Mlem added support today.

Hope everyone is doing well and having a good summer!

Running Lemmy is a fun (most of the time) hobby for me, so naturally when I heard about PieFed I wanted to give that a shot, too. I've started a server at https://wetshav.ing/

PieFed is a Lemmy alternative, with additional features that aim to make it easier to moderate, and perhaps aim to make it a nicer place overall.

Decide for yourself if you'd like to try it: https://join.piefed.social/features/

You can apply for an account at https://wetshav.ing/ and I'll approve it ASAP. For now I'm limiting it to usernames that I recognize.

Nice Osprey. They are very common where I live but I still get excited every time I spot one.

In this case would you do extra stropping, or just the normal amount of stropping?

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts - "Santa Noir" w/ 28mm Badger
  • Razor: Union Razor Cutlery 5/8 Full Hollow (7)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Ozark Mountain - Soap
  • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - I, Rich Moose - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Declaration Grooming, House of Mammoth - Cerberus - Liniment

I haven't used this razor in a little while, and since I had two great straight shaves the past couple of days, I figured it was a good time to break it out and test my new shallow angle skills. Great overall!

I've mentioned before that I wanted to spin up a PieFed server, which is an alternative to Lemmy. I created a new VPS (this time in the USA for much faster latency from where I live) and got it going.

Unfortunately, since I've experimented with PieFed once before and spun up an instance on my home server (using the same domain name (https://wetshav.ing/), our little Lemmy instance here has been looking for it (and failing) for the last 3 months since I just spun it up, tested federation, and spun it down. Because of that, federation is broken at the moment. I can seemingly comment on Lemmy posts from PieFed, and Lemmy posts make their way to PieFed, but PieFed posts don't show up on Lemmy, and there's some other weird comment stuff that doesn't work.

Hopefully, once our Lemmy server does it's thing tonight at midnight, it'll reattempt whatever it needs to attempt and everything will catch up. Right now the Lemmy logs say it's 1800+ activities behind, and that it retries every 24 hours. 1800+ sounds like it knows it's about 3 months behind with posts, comments, upvotes, etc all in the queue. So, my hope is that it'll sort of catch up on its own... but it might not.

Anyway, if you want to try PieFed, applications are open at https://wetshav.ing/. Just be warned it's still very new to me and could come crashing down at any moment! It should work just like Lemmy but with more options for squashing fascists and other undesirable users.
