It's happening right now in Geneva ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ! The @w3c team (@simone, @dontcallmeDOM, @plehegar, @p20n, Tara Whalen and Sylvia Cadena) and W3C members join global leaders in shaping the future of digital identity to promote trusted wallets, credentials and infrastructure for the benefit of all humans.

Government-approved digital credentials (driver license, etc.) are becoming more commonly used online. The @w3c@w3c.social Digital Credentials #API enables websites to request credentials, and for users to consent to return credentials that they carry around in #DigitalWallets

@simone@w3c.social explains how this API advances #privacy-preserving Web identities: https://www.w3.org/blog/2025/w3c-digital-credentials-api-publication-the-next-step-to-privacy-preserving-identities-on-the-web/ #gc25

Last April, @nataliabielova@hostux.social demonstrated that websites use various #tracking technologies to collect user data. Privacy regulations like the EU's #GDPR require user consent, but many use manipulative "dark patterns" in cookie banners. Technical standards, like those from @w3c@w3c.social, aim to improve #privacy, and solutions include a taxonomy of tracking purposes and standardized consent recording to enhance compliance and user control.

At the @w3c@w3c.social meeting in April 2025, co-chairs @torgo@mastodon.social and @jyasskin@hachyderm.io gave an overview of @tag@w3c.social 's ongoing and new work. After the publication of two W3C statements -- the #ethical web principles and the #privacy guidelines --, the TAG is notably working on an "explainer explainer" and new findings, such as a finding on #AI. The group has also started a "TAG Associates program" to include external experts in their work.
