You spelled Fin Tech Bros wrong

I thought Lemmy supported horizontal scaling for federation activities.

Wondering how many instances of the federation server reddthat is running and if increasing the number does anything for the issue.

Edit: It seems that 0.19 started synchronizating activities, so horizontal scaling is out of the question.

Again, more complicated.

It doesn't have to be.

Are the algorithms mathematically sound, or just AI/machine learning magic fairy dust?

MAB algorithms lie in middle. They are a mathematically sound way to explore the unknown and make reasonable decisions given whatever context is available.

There have been a few hospital trials with success, but progress is slow and funding is low. There are a few really interesting papers if you are interested to read more.

Do the algorithms have implicit biases against poor people, or those with darker skin or who live in certain postcodes?

In a sense, it's not different than laws that discriminate against people of color or other marginalized communities. The fact that a bunch of super privileged lawmakers create laws that disproportionately harm us, does not mean that the concept of law is flawed.

You got to ask yourself why the algorithm was given that information in the first place, and more importantly who gave it?

What we call algorithm, is actually two things. A set of instructions (the actual algorithm) and a set of parameters. The instructions explain how to use those parameters in order to make a decision. The parameters may or may not be biased, it all depends on the process that is used to generate those parameters.

AI in particular uses a process called training, in which people make decisions, and another algorithm is used to adjust the parameters so those decisions can be genralized and repeated by the AI. When, biased people make biased decisions, they are going to train an AI to make biased decisions.

Unfortunately, that's our reality, biased people make biased decisions, as a result we have biased laws and biased algorithms.

By the way, this is what the author calls algorithm cleanse, and it's bureaucracy supercharged. Why hire someone to reject applicants of color when you can build an algorithm to do that? Making a legal case against that is much harder, and the legal system isn't ready to understand the nuisances of the case.

However, in contrast to the laws, we marginalized people can create our own "algorithms", thay are not biased to our best effort. The fediverse is living proof of this. Why fight the system when we can make our own?

I think not. For example, the 2023 winner was from "Country: The Old Mermaid Townsfolk".

IMO it's never about the tool, but who controls it. For example, nuclear energy is a neutral thing on its own, when used to generate power it's (arguably) a net positive, when used for bombing it's a net negative.

The same goes for algorithms, when they are used to save lives at hospitals it's a net positive, when used to harvest people's attention it becomes a net negative.

(For anyone interested, I have MAB algorithms in mind, they can be used to prioritize patients at hospitals, or make recommendations in social media. You can guess which application of the algorithm is more commonly used, well researched, and well funded.)

I have sound sensory issues, I get headaches, unexpected sounds make me rage, and lose focus. I use both earbuds and headphones to manage those issues.

Overall, both have their uses and if you are able to, I recommend you invest in both. If you have to choose I have broken down below some things to think about before making a choice.

In any case, getting the right pair for you may require some trial and error, don't be afraid to try products and return them if they don't work for you.

Sound Sensory Issues

A good pair of ANC (active noise cancellation) earbuds is more expensive. Also, for some people it's hard to find the right fit. After that, they quality is about the same for earbuds and headphones. For example, if you set them on high and play some music on low volume, you won't be able to hear a loud highway.

The advantage of the headphones are the cushions, the have a tighter seal making the ANC less important.

Also, some people have issues with ANC, it's not that common, but I recommend you try it out before making a purchase.

Comfort

Wearing earbuds for long periods of time can be tiring, there is some pressure on your ear (shouldn't be too much or you may need to try a smaller size of foam tips). Over the ear headphones, with good cushions, are much more comfortable, but you may need to get used to it. On ear headphones are a huge NO.

Do not underestimate how important this is. Even the best pair won't do anything for you if you can't wear it. Also, don't trust other people's recommendations for this, it's highly personal and you cannot know if a pair will be comfortable for you before you try them out.

Activities

If you move around a lot, headphones are not stable enough and can be a distraction. Earbuds with the right fit are okay, you can run, you can jump, you can hang upside down, they will stay in their place.

Also, sometimes you need to be aware of your surrounding, while ANC settings can be great, they will never beat removing one for the earbuds.

Sound Quality

Headphones take this one, they are a better value for money and they are the best sound delivery system known to humanity.

If you are willing to go the extra mile, there are communities on the internet dedicated to spending insane amounts of money for headphones. Unless you are a professional, avoid them.

What to buy

As someone said, right now the best options go as following:

  • Buy Sennheiser for the best sound quality.
  • Buy Bose for the best noise cancellation.
  • Buy Sony for the best middle ground.

This is true for both earbuds and headphones.

For earbuds, 250$ is price you want to aim at, cheaper earbuds won't have a good enough ANC and more expensive pairs don't offer much to compensate for their price. It's not that if you got spare money they are a bad purchase, but you got to really appreciate the niche.

For headphones, I haven't done any market research recently so I am going to provide some general guidelines.

  1. Bluetooth is more expensive, the comfort makes it worth it but there is a peak on sound quality. The Sony XM5-1000 are a good first buy. An equivalent option are the Bose QC35. I am not sure about Sennheiser, they have more options but they are more expensive.
  2. If you are okay with a coord I believe you can go much cheaper, even pairs in the 100$ range will be good.

Keep in mind that these products will last for years. I got the Bose QC35 5 years ago and I only had to change the cushions which costed 5$. I know 250$ is a lot of money, when I bought them I was making ~720$ a month (Greek salaries are a joke), but it was worth it.

Also, I am going to contradict myself by saying that you should boycott Sony. The Sony WF4 and WF5 have battery drain issues that have not been addressed. Not all pairs have this issue, but it can get really bad and there has been at least one recorded explosion while charging. There is a thread on the "alien site" with a tonne of information about this. Personally, I had the WF4 and managed to get a refund because the battery would last less than 10minutes.

Miscellaneous

  1. Headphones will mess with your hair.
  2. Headphones and glasses don't go well for some people, personally I don't have an issue.
  3. It's easy to lose an earbud, I haven't but sometimes the concept causes me anxiety. This is especially important if only one earbuds connects via Bluetooth, since the other will be rendered useless.

PS This got "a bit" long, been writing it since yesterday when the post was created. I am starting to think headphones have become a special interest of mine 😂

I tend to agree with your points.

The key idea for me is that everything is a dating app. Social media are a great place to get to know someone and become interested in them. However, there is no straightforward way to transition that interest into a connection or a relationship. That's what dating apps provide a way to broadcast your availability along with other parameters like your gender, age, location and interests.

An alternative would be toot on Mastodon or blog about that. That would inform people interested in your online persona that your dms are open for a chat. Of course, that comes with issues on its own...

Spam or unsolicited advances (aka dick pics) are a huge one, especially for women. One way to solve that would be for men do these kind of posts and women to react as they see appropriate. In an ideal society with gender equality, that wouldn't be necessary, but at the moment IMO it's easier to deal with men disguised as russian super models bating for your money, than angry men feeling entitled to your body.

Another issue would be the social repercussions of this information being publicly available. IMO that's easy to deal with since you don't have to tie your online persona to your real Identity. Also, you can have multiple online personas. Hopefully, society gets to a point where expression of sexuality is not taboo, until then there are safe ways to do it.

Boston is a compact battleship with a complement of 18 programmable keys, in a footprint 2u narrower than a full-size, and only about 1.5u wider than a 96%.

I am sold.

I cannot help, but your post got me wondering can you share your keyboard or a picture?

I cannot understand how some many fkeys could be useful. Why not use regural shortcuts?

I feel you, it's hard to get things done, it's hard to track every thing that needs to be done, it's hard to maintain a balance when things are difficult at work.

The past I have pursued an ADHD diagnosis, and gotten medication. It helps a lot, it provides emotional stability and the ability to focus on something without getting distracted all the time. Task initiation is still difficult though...

I don't anybody has a perfect solution but there are things you can try:

  1. Prioritize your mental health and not your work. It sounds difficult, I get it, if I don't get paid me and my sister aren't going to have food on the table. But, having a balance helps you be productive, which in turn helps you maintain a job.
  2. Make lists, your brain will forget. Also, having things written sometimes helps with anxiety (though seeing the volume of things to be done can be intimidating)
  3. Routines help a lot. It's hard to establish one, but once you do it make things easier. Remember to make them interesting, but don't depend on that. Your brain will get used and get bored easily, but you got stick to it, until you no longer have to think about it.
  4. Remember to take a break. It doesn't matter how productive (or not) you were, you get tired from all this anxiety. Just allow yourself to be free a few hours every once in a awhile.
