Great! Sorry, I guess I missed the announcement that was happening.

Nice example of why federation is so great. While the site was down I could still look at my startrek community subs from my instance.

@[email protected] startrek.website is returning a 502 bad gateway error.

In addition to that,

  • I like the challenge of leaning new technologies and hosting my own web apps
  • It lets me feel that I have a bit more control over my user and posts
  • I get my own vanity domain / user address
  • I get a good understanding of how the lemmy frontend, backend and database work (yay open-source!)
  • I can keep my instance up to date with the latest lemmy releases (some are still running 0.17.3!)
  • I can do some dev work and testing on my instance, if I want, without impacting others
  • it reduces load on the main instances

There’s more, but I think that’s a good enough list for now. Have a nice day!

See that downvote on my comment? There is someone trying to drown us out.

I was just seeing a 500 internal server error on kbin.social a short while ago. Is it back?

Welcome to lemmy! So far my experience has also been wonderful. Just remember it’s our responsibility to keep things this way. It could quickly go a different direction, where all the kind and amazing people get drowned out.

Also Safari. The only issue I have is the auto page zoom cuts off the right side slightly. Very minor but still bothers me. I filed a bug on it over on the lemmy-ui GitHub project.

Yes, it does matter. Unfortunately you will have to try canceling (just tap or click the pending button) and subbing several times until you get lucky and it finally works.

This is sort of a catch 22, because the issue is caused by the server being under load (and some bad code or database queries likely needing to be fixed / optimized / refactored), and clicking the buttons is adding to that load, contributing to the problem.

TL;DR pending subscriptions are not subbed, so do not federate.

Enjoy your upvote fellow lemming!

This is really cool. Nice work dude.

My initial reply was to @[email protected] but I’m on my own hosted instance, which is too small to be federated to kbin.social, I guess? I signed up on kbin.social and none of my replies from here on lemmy are present in the threads on kbin.social.

Sir, this is a Wendy’s

But in all seriousness, this is a setting for the Lemmy web UI. Maybe kbin has it too? 🤷‍♂️
