Never had a reason to block an instance, here or in mastodon.

If falsehoods are significantly represented on the web, Gemini, having no way to fact-check the info, will believe the sites it scrapped.

Interesting… so it will be great at falling for conspiracy theories. Awesome.

I agree that publishing a blog might sometimes seem like writing to yourself. I still do it occasionally when I have something to say. Much to my surprise, I get ransom references that people read, and in some cases, they liked what they read.

Unlike quick thoughts on social media posts, which tend to be ephemeral, blog posts have much longer lifespans.

But yep, I see the author's point…

I have no issue in paying creators with my YouTube Premium subscription. What annoys me is seeing creators feed the algorithm with “regular posts” or create filler videos for sponsors when they have nothing to say.

That and seeing explainer videos from someone who learned something five minutes before recording… the number of copycats and regurgitating the same news content is depressing.

The same goes for the epidemic of faceless AI videos narrating generic content… horrible. The “don't recommend channel” must be worn off by now, from me alone. :-)

Fantastic exceptions from talented creators make it worth it, so I am happy.

Not counting WordPress, that I really (really!!!) dislike (just because; your mileage may vary), I would say that Writefreely is the closest to traditional blog platform with activitypub baked in.

You can try it on https://writefreely.org/instances

Really love podcasting. Last one I created was a decade ago, give or take, gotta do another soon. :-)

But I think you pretty much nailed the current state of affairs.

Weird, I had a bluesky add-on on my experimental friendica installation and have not noticed any messages other than the ones people I followed participated in.

I have since deleted it, so cannot figure out what they have done differently.

He was the founder… I did not know he had left.

I find it odd that people follow Jack Dorsey into another sewer in troves. They seem to like the previous Twitter experiment, while I find it repugnant.

The lesson today is that I don't get the social media phenomenon. My bad. I hope they have a ton of fun.

I like the concept of the fediverse, just like I liked Fidonet back in the 80’s (that allowed BBSs to “exchange” both forum contents, called “echomail”, and private messages).

I have some issues on sustainability (hosting costs money, moderation and system maintenance can be a pain) and the “donation” model. My solution is that while I host for myself, and don’t really mind having some guest on my platform, I don’t take / accept donations - ever. My instance dies the moment I don’t have the resources to maintain it (money, time or patience). The main reason I don’t take donations is really simple: I don’t want to owe anyone anything, this is not a job or a burden I have to carry.

I have been hosting systems for 35+ years, and it’s all good with no money involved. It’s a blast dealing with the tech, really love it. Most of my systems and either one or two users (me and the wife). :-)
