Yes I know about kodi but I have a few issues with that for one it has a pretty outdated ui but this is not a deal breaker for me but it also doesn't allow the opening of other applications like Netflix or jellyfin etc, you have to install a compatible plugin.

Are there any gnu/Linux desktop environments that are optimised for a home theatre time situation to be used with a remote or game controller? At the moment I will probably just use gnome or kde but it doesn't work well at all with remote or game controller.

I like 1 or 2 maybe 1 most.

Even if it's not satire I think it's still worth understanding other people's perspective even if we think they are wrong they have the same opinions about us and not opening up and listening to them creates an unessessary divide that we see now in America.

If you want to set-up disk encryption you should probably understand that while the server is booted up as far as I know there will be no disk encryption leaving it completely available for anyone to take data from

Although most people entering your house would probably unplug the laptop and open it at there own home the data could still be valuable if it stays powered up with battery power.

Have you used chezmoi in the past? Do you know how it compares to gnu stow?

Fair enough, I'll stop bugging you.

A rasperry pi idles at about 2 watts vs a laptop that idles at about 4 watts. At $0.30/kwh (a very high price for electricity) you would save 5 dollars per year on electricity. This laptop trades blows with the rasperry pi and costs half the price (55$ aud vs over 200$ aud for a brand new pi 5) Even this second hand one costs 110$ aud which is twice the cost. With that cost of electricity it would take 11 years in order to break even. And that's only if you consider monetary cost and not environmental cost.

I have a Samsung phone. I checked app cleaner to see if there are any meta services and there weren't any so I suppose I'm good.

This is generally not true. If you are using your laptop as a home server chances are it's going to be idling 99% of the time and laptops are generally pretty good in terms of idle power draw if you manage to disable the screen (or just disconnect it, take it off and find a way to repurpose it)

And in terms of environmental impact saving a laptop from landfill is definitely better since the majority of a computers impact is from the co2 emmissions from the manufacturing process. And this isn't taking into account the likely ethical considerations such as supporting terrible mining practices for resources like cobalt.

The construction cite issue is a fair point. If you really need traffic maybe you should try using magic earth. It's not FOSS but the privacy would still be leagues better than Waze (which is owned by Google)

Your right, I'm sorry about that I made an edit to correct it.

Thanks for asking i've been wondering myself actually. I looked it up and organic maps doesn't actually do traffic, although magic earth does (another not foss but apparenty privacy respecting map app that uses osm) It says it's just crowdsourced from the general public who uses magic earth (in an anonimous way, I guess there are enough magic earth uses for it to work since Some people say it works really well. (although others say it doesn't you should probably try it for yourself.)

On another note that I also found from my research just then, traffic knowing apps don't actually improve travel times but they do make previously congested places more congested. sources:

source 1

source 2

source 3

Edit: Magic earth is not foss so there is no way to varify that the app is actually respecting your privacy like it says it is, i'm sorry for any confusion.

For a school project I need to make a simple python program. I need ideas so if you have something that you want made for you then please post it here. I'll release it here under a gnu general public license once I've finished.

I recently bought a pair of KZ zsn pro x from the official store on ali express and when I started listening to them they sound really empty with seemingly no base. This is comparing to my budget gaming headphones (razer blackshark v2) From what I've heard online there is nothing but good things said about them. I got them on special for like 15 bucks which is so cheap.

Is it normal for iem's to have a almost non existent base compared to headphones or did I just get a bad batch of what I ordered? I did hear some complaints about bad Qc which I think means quality control so maybe thats the problem I'm no audiophile so I don't really know.

[[SOLVED]] Never mind guys sorry I am a little bit silly. They really need to go all the way right up your ears.

Hi everyone, I am looking for an encrypted messaging service to start using and recommending to my friends and family, I really want to get this right the first time. At the moment I'm looking at using matrix I really like it's bridges and federated nature, Although I'm not 100% sure about it's ux.

What I want to ask is what messaging service do you use and do you have any regrets with it? What encrypted messaging service would you recommended?

Edit: I just had another question are any of the bridges in matrix end to end encrypted? If person A used matrix and person B used signal could person A use a bridge to talk to person B securely?

Edit 2: thanks for all the responses guys it looks like signal seams like the best option since it has really good security like many other messaging apps but it's also easy to use.

I am a Linux beginner/amateur and I have sort of had enough of copy and pasting commands I find on the internet without having a good understanding of how they actually work.

I guess my end goal is to be able to comfortably install and use arch Linux with my own customization's and be able to fix it when things go wrong.

What tips/ideas do you have for getting better at navigating the terminal, and getting a better understanding of how the os works. What is a good roadmap to follow? And how did you, advanced Linux user, get to the stage your at now?

Edit: my current distro is bazzite just in case you were interested and thanks for all the replies you are all really helpful.

For the first time I am actually switching my main PC from Windows to Linux.

Problem: When booting into Fedora there was no display output, I changed it to safe graphics to install everything and that fixed it but after the install finished I tried turning it back off and there was still no display output

What I have already tried: I've tried installing drivers and everything I could find although that shouldn't be the problem since I have an AMD 6700xt and Fedora comes with AMD drivers built in. I also tried Installing Linux Mint thinking maybe the distro was the problem but it came up with the same issue.

And if anyone suggests it no there is no way I am going to daily drive on safe graphics.

Edit: I am dual booting on a single 500gb ssd with windows already installed on the other half of the drive, not sure if that would be the problem. Also a similar problem was happening on windows if I left the screen in login for too long without signing in the display would show no signal and it wouldn't wake up if I moved my mouse or clicked or pressed any keys.
