I wish I could upvote this more. Even field workers are required to provide documents to get a job. They also receive paper checks, with taxes taken out, just like the rest of us. So they're actually paying into a system they can't use.

I know some now legal immigrants, who were granted amnesty in the 80s, who support or feel indifferent about the mass deportations...

Sadly, something I've realized that is part of our United Statian culture is that we believe: "If I suffered, then others must suffer as well." We are not a kind or compassionate country. We do not care about our neighbors.

Yep. Spanish has a number of Arabic loan words, given Spain was conquered by the moors for a bit.

Maybe something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Articles_of_Confederation previously in the US?

the Congress observed them as it conducted business during the American Revolution (defense), directing the Revolutionary War effort, conducting diplomacy with foreign states (foreign relations), addressing territorial issues (cross-jurisdiction crime)

So what do they actually offer, on top of the work of creative people making music? Not much.

OK, so I left Spotify for Navidrome a while back BUT. What Spotify sells isn't music. Spotify sells curation and recommendations. Most people aren't music lovers that want to hunt for cool new music. They just want a pre-generated list of songs that they'll more or less like. That's actually kinda huge.

A recommendation engine is something I wish fediverse or open source would tackle. I'm on Navidrome now, but I'm definitely listening to way less music now—access isn't an issue—I just haven't had time to hunt around for new music. Investigating new bands takes time. On Spotify, you do it without even really thinking about it.

a place where nationwide laws are defaults, but smaller hierarchies can pass laws to supercede the higher defaults?

Hm... that kinda doesn't seem too useful, no? What would even be the point of the higher government if you can just completely ignore them locally?

A mashup using elements from this old dancing PSA:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18258561/pasting-a-huge-amount-of-text-into-vim-is-slow/79633075

I recently ran into this. I didn't realize that the swpfile slowed down pastes.

I was trying to paste 50kb of text in Vim, but it kept getting stuck and I had to kill -9 it.

But, then I ran :set noswapfile and the paste was instant! TIL!

Hey folks, We have been working on a project called InlineStyle

A European, open-source, fediverse based alternative to the Google ecosystem.

It’s a single platform with these services:

  • 📧 Email address @inlinestyle.it
  • 📹 Video sharing via PeerTube
  • 🎵 Music streaming with Funkwhale
  • 📝 Docs and Drive via Collabora/NextCloud
  • 📒 Markdown based notes
  • 🎮 Browser-based FOSS games (Celeste Classic, Tyrian, SuperTux, etc.)
  • 🌍 Static personal site hosting

All hosted in Europe. No telemetry, no ads, no corporate BS.

It’s not a startup pitch, just something we built because we got tired of being locked in.

The idea is to keep it sustainable with a simple support plan (€1.90/month) that unlocks upload features and personal email/webspace. Free tier available too, no login needed to browse.

Would love your thoughts. What should I improve? What’s missing for you to consider switching?

Our goal is to try to build a real #DeGoogle fediverse based path that doesn’t feel like a downgrade. It will take time, but we are willing to try and stay committed to the mission.

I'm experimenting with raidcale. I'm trying to find some client apps for Linux and Android.

So far, I have:

Desktop

  • Calendars: GNOME Calendar
  • Contacts: GNOME Contacts
  • Tasks: Errands
  • Journals: Unknown

Android:

Apps working with VTODO seem to be common enough, but does anyone know desktop apps that work with VJOURNAL?
