i just have it set to always on. there's no reason you need the bluer light in the day and you get used to it. less eye strain is less eye strain.
battery banks will have their own battery charge controller circuitry that controls the actual charging of the cells. it shouldn't be any different than plugging into the wall as far as battery safety.

but there's no fucking with electrical here? it's just chopping a corner out of the case. there's no reason to believe the psu connectors aren't intact and used as intended.
