if it worked that way then it should work the same from a win vm, you may have to fiddle with passing through the usb device or hub but that's usually auto for mouse and keyboard. i'd recommend virtmanager to run vms, btw.

tbf there's a lot more you can do on a pc than browse the internet, and especially considering the time period represented visually and the post text referencing dwarf fortress, i suspect they mean games, single player games particularly.
further, heroic games launcher isn't just for epic and gog games, you can install any exe. i use it for the ea games launcher because the lutris script was broken at the time. and in the wine manager in hgl settings you can choose either wine-ge latest or proton-ge latest (or whatever number version) as your default layer, which you can also change per game/app if you have trouble.
edit: and also you can set it to add to steam so you can still just use steam as your main launcher, for example on steam deck or using a media center rig in big picture mode.

it really just means near, not on the entrance itself. so place a chain like you might for a prison within a square or two of the door you want guarded and assign the dog or whatever trained animal to it. personally i like to just make a pen/pasture zone.
