I've always disliked plastic surgery, botox and heavy makeup. But that's normal enough

My real hot take is I am disgusted by long, fake nails. They make my skin crawl. They're so cumbersome, I truly don't understand how people love with them

My dad did so much right, but his one failing was financial. He was an insurance salesman and had plenty of money when I was very young, but at some point it all dried up and he seemed unable to make more. He didn't starve or anything, but at a certain point my brother had to step in and buy his house or he was going to lose it.

So now, I'm very cognizant of my spending and always having a good cash reserve.

But, he was also extremely generous when he did have money. His favorite way to spend money was on the people he loved and to make them happy.

So now, I also give freely. If it makes someone I love happy, and I can afford it, I'll give them whatever I think might make them smile, if even for a day

This article was pretty funny. I loved the writing style

As for the subject matter, I have never understood these mods. When I was young I gave them a try in Skyrim but I remember it just being distracting. It feels like multitasking: I'm doing two things half as good. I really don't see the point.

So that being said, I would love it if they had metrics on how long the mod stayed installed and how far into the game the player made it. Impossible, surely, but it would really clear up for me whether people are genuinely playing the game or whether they're installing for a level and... Ahem... Moving on to another activity

Normally I'd complain that they already did this but the first remaster had such terrible flaws like the hit boxes that honestly I'm happy they're taking another shot

I just hope they put it in the MCC. I like the all-in-one package there

Yeah, I've realized that you can't really put people as easily into the "introvert" and "extrovert" buckets, because it entirely depends on the day.

I can be a social butterfly one day, hyper productive the next, then want to watch reality TV and not leave the couch another. It just depends on the vibe of how I'm feeling

I'm desperate for better type checking in Python, and part of that is speed. So I'm very interested in these options

I recently started using uv based on a recommendation in another thread so I'll probably give ty a whirl sometime soon

It's definitely bizarre, because nobody in the story actually "works" besides the local militia and servants, yet everyone has money and is rich

It appears to be because you get a lump sum at some point (inheritance, dowry, whatever) then "invest" it and get interest payments. Or, in the case of Mr. Bennet, they have land that they pay others to work or lease out to farmers. Just really fascinating how hand-wavey the money is, it just "is" for the most part and you don't explain how or why you are rich

I figured it could be fun to do small discussion each time I finish an (interesting) book, since I always have so many thoughts but no book club to discuss them with.

I completed Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice last night, and I have to say I really enjoyed the book. I found it had a great amount of drama and intrigue to keep me reading on, even after my usual bedtime. But more significantly, I found the insight into 1800's English culture to be supremely interesting.

I was continually dazzled by the changes in English, and how we've modified the language as the years have progressed. For example, for someone to "condescend" in those days wasn't (in my interpretation) necessarily something rude, as it would be these days. It was seen as someone of higher station being humble enough to interact with and advise people who would generally be considered "beneath" them. For example, Lady Catherine is often described as condescending to Mr. Collins, which he takes great pleasure in.

This was also one of the first times I found an enjoyable use-case for LLMs, namely ChatGPT. I found it very helpful to be able to ask questions about the time period and its relation to the book and get specific, well thought out answers without spending too much time searching for reputable sites and scanning through potential sources for answers. That's time that I wanted to be reading, not researching. For example, I was curious how the "ten thousand a year" income was scaled, and how that worked out to today's dollars and how that income was generated. I also was able to ask questions like why Elizabeth might have been embarrassed at a certain scene, or why Mr. Collins was considered so "uncool" by everyone. In fact, a lot of my questions revolved around Mr. Collins and what he was specifically doing to be considered a social pariah by some. Admittedly, I could have had the same experience (potentially) using an annotated book, which I did want to do at some point, but I didn't find the time to get to the library to find a copy, and ChatGPT was conveniently in my pocket at any time. I generally consider myself largely anti-"AI hype" - but I'd be foolish not to admit that this is one of those use-cases that it really shines.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I'd probably give it a five out of five, meaning that I will probably re-read it someday in the future.

Love to hear others thoughts:

  • When did you last read it?
  • Did you enjoy it?
  • Would you read it again?
  • Did anything about the book stick with you in particular?

I suppose then a more accurate description would have been horticulture; but I'm using "farming" here as in planting and growing things, not for subsistence necessarily

I guess on some level there's something wholesome about it being a gardening game. I wonder how much of the success is owed to the natural human inclination towards farming

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I don't like it, but I appreciate your opinion. I'm open to being convinced it's cool, so hearing positive opinions is a positive

Thank you

And changing minds is difficult, and by all accounts requires kindness and understanding rather than blame and dehumanizing.

I get frustrated with how most outspoken people on the left seem to take the easy answer of "they're evil!" when talking about people who disagree with them

The existing community at [email protected] may no longer be a viable option since the feddit.de server has been down for a while now. I've created [email protected] as a replacement. Mostly out of my own need for assistance! So if you're a Synology owner, head on over and subscribe

(and also help me fix my issue thanks)

I've had an issue with my router and had to replace it. Unfortunately, now my Synology NAS does not appear in the device list of the router or using Synology Assistant.

The server is connected using an Ethernet cable, so I would assume the reconnection would be automatic.

I have tried restarting the server, but it did not reconnect on successful boot.

I know it's still alive because I can hear the disks working on something, so the system is up.

Is there another way to restore connectivity?

Sounds like I may be able to connect the device to my desktop using an Ethernet cable, but to what end?

I realize it won't be like this forever, but while scrolling Lemmy I eventually come to a point when I start to see a lot of old posts and it's a perfect signal that I've done more than enough scrolling for the day

For me it's moving your bed away from the side walls so it's in the middle of the room. I had my bed to the side my whole childhood

Right now I use Feeder, but I want to add larger feeds like HackerNews or r/comics and if I do that then my feed gets overwhelmed with those much more frequently updated feeds.

I'd love an (Android) app with the ability to let the other feeds intermingle near the top of the sort with the larger feeds

Kind of a "sort my chronological per feed"

Question is probably too late and I'm not much of a stockpiler, this is more for curiosity of what others are thinking about

I know for me, the Kirkland brand whiskey is surprisingly good and also Canadian so I may go today and pick up a bottle (or at least check the price)
