Yeah I like it too... but it was generating an abnormal amount of traffic. I'll see if I can figure out what is going on... but mlmym is pretty basic, doesn't seem to have much in the way of configuration options.

I especially like the look on this guy's face...

Was told there would be puppies. A++ would view again.

Yeah... I understood outgoing federation of activities was linear FIFO. The new feature in 0.19.6 allows N instances of linear FIFO, with related activities federated in sequence.

Our outgoing activities go out very quickly, aussie.zone has a very low activity rate so remote instances don't tend to get behind at all.

How a LW user replied to a current AZ post and had it show up here in a decent timeframe is a mystery to me, seeing as they're still running their custom version of 0.19.3

[–] lodion@aussie.zone 1 points 9 months ago

I can only guess the order activities are federated in is random? Which doesn't make much sense.

[–] lodion@aussie.zone 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

It's configurable... defaults to 1 thread. Given we're slowly catching up with LW during low activity parts of the day, I think 2 should be enough.

Not sure about the whole picture, but credit to Keating for bringing in compulsory superannuation.

0.19.6 includes many fixes and new features... the biggest for me is "Parallel federation sending". This allows instance admins to send multiple federated activities in parrallel, rather than singly in series.

Not that its a real issue for other admins with activities from AZ, but I have set this to 2 for our outgoing activities.

Hopefully the lemmy.world admins will upgrade to 0.19.6 soon and do the same, this should allow AZ to catch up with activities from LW, and stay up to date. Over time as activities from LW have decreased we've "caught up" to within ~5 days of live. Doubling the rate that LW sends activities to AZ will help massively.

Ok... DB migration was an offline my migration, my bad. Took longer I expected... but we're back in action 🤓

Maybe AskAnAussie? Or something like that. Want to keep the communities here Australia focused.

Federation issues with LW have improved, and I expect to be eliminated with a future version of the lemmy server software.

Good, fwiw you're banned here too now.

Another lemmy upgrade incoming, shouldn't be down more than 5 minutes. Will unpin once complete.

I'll be upgrading aussie.zone to the latest release candidate of lemmy 0.18.1 in the next 15 minutes. I expect ~2 minutes downtime.

Once complete I'll unpin this post.

I've just removed a post that had c*&t in the title. I'm not going to get into specific rules, but I don't want that language in post titles. In comments etc in context, fine. But post titles are displayed to all users without the possibility of being filtered.

Please think of others when posting.

In the interest of transparency, I'll be aiming to make a post at the start of each month detailing the income and expenses for the prior month as it relates to aussie.zone.

A huge thank you to everyone that has donated on my Ko-Fi page. It is because of your support that aussie.zone will continue to operate.

Income

Net donations received for June 2023 was ~$335 AUD. 🎉🎉 This is incredibly generous of everyone, especially given the current cost of living pressures we're all facing. Thank you.

When I first launched the Ko-fi page, I hadn't realised it defaulted to USD. So some donors may have unwittingly donated in USD. My apologies, I did send an email to all donors up until that point to make them aware.

A special thank you to those that have commited to contribute monthly. This is massively appreciated!

Expenses

Expenses this month were OVH hosting ($33) and Porkbun domain registration ($9). Wasabi object storage is at the end of its first month being free, and will incur costs in a week or so.

Balance

$335 - $42 = ~$293 surplus at current costs. However given the recent surge in users and their associated resource utilisation on the server, I'm expecting to upgrade the VPS in the next few weeks.

THANK YOU

I'd like to recognise and thank donors in some way. Lemmy does not currently have anything built in to recognise them that I'm aware of. I'm open to ideas. One perk I'd like to offer is an @aussie.zone email address redirect. Any donors that would like to take this up, please hit me up 😀

Ok, its been a week since I posted graphs... so here are graphs for the last 2 weeks for my fellow nerds. Commentary at the bottom...

CPU:

Memory:

Network:

Storage:

So... why the drop in traffic from the 24th? That is the day I put the server behind Cloudflare. At the time, traffic was increasing substantially and looking to become a trigger for a server upgrade; OVH provide increased traffic quotas with larger VPS offerings. Rather than spend more money, I thought I'd test the site behind Cloudflare. So far so good. No issues have been reported, and I've observed none. And in that time we've saved ~300GB through Cloudflare's caching, equivalent to 10% of the monthly bandwidth quota currently:

As for the drop in used storage on Wednesday, this was due to cached object storage images being deleted from /tmp when the server was rebooted to add 2 vCPUs. This is harmless, any images are automatically retrieved from Wasabi and cached locally again.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Reboot complete (aussie.zone)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by lodion@aussie.zone to c/meta@aussie.zone

The aussie.zone server will be getting a reboot shortly, in order to upgrade from 2 to 4 vCPU. It shouldn't be down for more than 5 minutes or so.

Today aussie.zone tipped over 1000 users! Not bad considering I only stood it up 21 days ago (5th of June) 🎉🎆🥂
