I use NixOS, which is kind of a middle thing. The OS is generally immutable, except through one central config. This allows to tweak the OS to exactly the way you want it, whilst preventing any accidental changes and allowing atomic rollbacks.

Learning Nix configuration syntax is a bit of a bump in the road, but once you've got that it's smooth sailing

Yeah you do, IPs don't work afaik and even if they did, many Fediverse servers don't support them so your compatibility would be abysmal

That's fair enough

If you are cool with using Cloudflare, you can use Argo Tunnel to expose HTTP(S) services to the internet with DDOS protection and all of Cloudflares features.

They've made it free some time ago, you just need a pc/server in your network running the cloudflare agent software.

honestly it would be better than it is now. currently content is in what we call silos or walled gardens. if my grandma posts to Facebook i can't see it because I'm not with Facebook.

If Facebook (/ mEtA) went on the Fediverse, that would also mean exposing any and all content over the ActivityPub standard. Every user can decide themselves if they want to see posts from Facebooks servers, but there would at least be the opportunity to see the content at all.

Also it would make switching away from big platforms way easier, because why would i stay with Facebook, when i can just switch to e.g. tchncs.de or my own server and keep in touch with all my old contacts.

TL;DR Big cooperations federating their content silos would be good, that's why (for the most part) it's not going to happen

Most of the servers running lemmy have federation enabled and open (as you can see, I'm one of those self-hosted instances) and you can just interact with them. Some do have federation locked down, but that's the minority

You are right, but many people use electric cars as an excuse to delay or cancel car-related regulations in cities To the sound of "Why should the city be car-free when electric cars are quiet and don't emit fumes?!", and that's something we have to fight, because in the city there should be no (private) cars needed
