in 2018, Facebook told Vox that it doesn't use private messages for ad targeting. But a few months later, The New York Times, citing "hundreds of pages of Facebook documents," reported that Facebook "gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages."

Surprising? No. Appalling? Yes.

Aaron Swartz would loathe what Reddit has become.

I mean when I navigate to the Lemmy’s donation page and proceed with setting up a recurring payment, my bank asks for confirmation of the transaction. During this, my bank identifies the recipient as “PeerTube.social”. I find it a bit confusing, but I guess the other Lemmy founder also owns peertube.

Yeah, fair enough, and good points! I also hope I can manage with the same phone until it stops receiving new updates, so not super thrilled to buy a new mobile phone just for that either, doesn’t make sense to me at all.

The court orders show the government telling Google to provide the names, addresses, telephone numbers and user activity for all Google account users who accessed the YouTube videos between January 1 and January 8, 2023. The government also wanted the IP addresses of non-Google account owners who viewed the videos.

“This is the latest chapter in a disturbing trend where we see government agencies increasingly transforming search warrants into digital dragnets. It’s unconstitutional, it’s terrifying and it’s happening every day,” said Albert Fox-Cahn, executive director at the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project. “No one should fear a knock at the door from police simply because of what the YouTube algorithm serves up. I’m horrified that the courts are allowing this.” He said the orders were “just as chilling” as geofence warrants, where Google has been ordered to provide data on all users in the vicinity of a crime.

Thanks! Agreed that it has its purpose. I also fully understand people have a hard time understanding my viewpoint when they don’t share the same needs.

I did try donating for Lemmy through Liberapay using the link in this post but canceled the process when I saw that the money recipient was “peertube.social”, which I don’t use. I’d feel better donating if the money went to Lemmy and not Peertube.

It is not AI-generated, I sadly don’t have the original one, but only the one I saved from Facebook before deleting my account. It was captured using my iPhone 6s back in 2016, maybe I had used the portrait photo mode that creates the horrible faux depth effect bubble.

I did consider Asus ROG Ally and Valve’s Steam Deck, both seem like an excellent choice assuming you have an interest in other things as well, but those didn’t seem too plug-and-play with the PlayStation 5, since it’s the only system I use.

I did play through Labyrinth of Galleria 1 with my phone's remote play, but its display is small and I mainly play games such as visual novels so a bigger screen of the Portal is nice. I also didn’t like various context distractions such as random robo calls in the middle of a cut scene.

I play a lot of games that aren’t as sensitive to input latency, games such as Disgaea, Persona, and various visual novels. So it works great for my purposes. I haven’t tried it outside my home network yet, though.

And right after giving her the empty box, she tried for a good part of an hour to squeeze into that sleeve.
