They really gloss over the impact of social media from outside each country, pumping up nationalistic outrage. That seems to be a significant part of the story.

It's really unfortunate that it has come to this. I've been handing out tents, sleeping bags, clothing, food, and donating money when I could for years. It feels like shoveling sand in front of a tsunami.

If anyone has a workable idea -- that hasn't already been tried -- on how to solve the homeless problem that is fair to the unhoused, local homeowners, business owners, towns, and taxpayers... now is the time to step up.

Just downloaded the free-threading RC version via pyenv. Looking forward to taking it for a spin.

The trick with cast iron and pancakes is to pre-heat with oil or butter, then treat the first one as a 'test victim.' For the rest, you turn down the heat and they come out even.

You can hide the first one under a pancake stack or just hand it off to a growing teenager.

We were waving iPhones feet away from the tag. It didn't get picked up so we wandered out to the neighborhood.

My guess is, to preserve battery, iPhones wake up and scan for nearby AirTags only X seconds at a time (don't have actual numbers, but guessing somewhere between 30-120 seconds). Whatever AirTag ID they pick up, they send anonymously to the cloud along with location. If the owner has the tag in lost mode and the ID matches, they get notified.

This means if you're walking around with your phone and it hasn't hit the scan window, you could miss the tag. This works in a high-density area like a city center with lots of phones waking up and scanning at different times, but not so much in low density places.

In that case, a GPS tag with cell modem might work better, but it's a lot pricier and requires regular charging.

Was driving up the coast with family. No cell signal for long stretches. At a stop, went to send a message to my wife who had walked over to a grocery store. iPhone said SOS only, but offered to send via sattelite. Didn't realize it was an option. Sure, why not.

So it had me stand outside and twirl around like an idiot until it said it had a signal lock. Pretty cool animated globe graphics. I hit 'retry' to send the message.

Fail.

Turns out it only works if the recipient is also reachable right at that point. Doesn't queue it up for later transmit or anything. Lesson: be careful if out hiking in the woods and sending emergency messages for help. Make sure you try more than one person.

Vodka martini:

  • Shaker full of crushed ice
  • 2 jiggers vodka (brand doesn't matter)
  • 1/2 jigger Dolin dry white Vermouth (green bottle)
  • 1 jigger warm water

Cover. Shake vigorously until your arm hurts. Sift and pour in glass. Garnish with 1-3 green olives stuffed with garlic. If you want to go dirty, add 1/2 jigger of olive water.

A kid favorite. We call it "Egg in a hole."

Tips:

  • Use a small wine or cocktail glass to make the hole. Rotate slowly on top of a wooden cutting board. Much easier and looks nicer.

  • Whole wheat bread works great.

  • Cover the pan with a glass pot lid to control the heat. Flip as soon as the egg is opaque. Don't worry, it keeps cooking. Otherwise, the bread cooks much faster so you end up with either burnt bread or overcooked egg.

  • Dabs of butter on both sides make the bread golden brown and crispy.

  • Also good with slices of avocado and your choice of hot sauce. Or if going sweet, cooked peaches and maple syrup.

You've been using cheap cables.

Next step up is a JCAT: https://audiobacon.net/2019/11/02/the-jcat-signature-lan-a-1000-ethernet-cable/amp/

/s if not obvious.
