This is announced just so we don't cancel Disney+ after finishing binge-watching that one show.

Omar campaigned with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) toward the end as liberals looked for a decisive win after their recent electoral setbacks. Sanders said at a Minneapolis rally that he wanted to ensure Omar “wins and, in fact, wins big.”

Create an account so you can do anything with your purchased device? That's just plain abusive. How about: thank you for using your hard-earned, post-tax funds and choosing our product. Let's get you going as fast and easily as possible, then go as far as we can to make things work before having you stop and create an account?

Only reason to create one is so you can save a persistent context for multiple types of interaction. Support multiple users, or different mobile devices, maybe groups of devices. But for a single device, out of the box, no sign up should EVER be needed.

Unless the company's priority is to hoover all your usage data, analyze it to death, invade your privacy, and sell it for profit.

Before podcasts, there used to be RSS readers. They let you quickly subscribe and scan a lot of blogs and catch up on latest posts. Flipboard started as a fancy mobile app version, with access to articles from mainstream news providers.

It's grown and changed a lot, but it's essentially a quick way to scan for interesting daily news.

They've now added ways to subscribe and catch up on Fediverse sources like Mastodon (and soon, Lemmy).

The CEO has a podcast called Dot Social where he talks to people about how this Fediverse stuff all fits together: https://dot-social.simplecast.com/

I just spent the weekend installing 24.04 on a Lenovo laptop as a self-hosted server. The only thing that didn't work was the fingerprint scanner. No big deal, but it seems peripheral device driver support is still a bit janky.

Running the self-hosted apps under Docker, though, worked without a hitch. chef's kiss

After Hurricane Katrina, they reached a similar conclusion, that it was best to let natural wetlands handle storm flows.

But having it work all the way up and down the coast will be difficult. Just in NorCal, you're looking at long stretches of coastal San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties where land is near sea level and storm surges can take out huge chunks of inhabited terrain.

According to recent garden store advice, hydrangeas, rhododendron, and blueberry bushes all like slightly acidic pH.

I remember freelance designer friends complaining of the same issues years ago. Lack of time, clueless managers making last minute changes, and fixed-bid projects with unrealistic deadlines.

The same issue has been true in the broader tech industry. One solution is if you're bidding on a fixed contract, to put strict cost control measures and limit the number of revisions.

Another is to move into specializations that they can't get elsewhere. Be the place you go for water effects, or amazing space travel, or realistic humans. If you're relying on After Effects, or Houdini, or Maya, anyone who has access to the same tools becomes your competitor. But create plugins that nobody else has and makes you special and you stand out.

Once everyone figured out how to make a website, it became a commodity and it was a race to the bottom. Those who made it figured out how to move up the food chain.

I just spent two days trying to get a Lenovo laptop to dual-boot Windows-11 and Ubuntu (on an external SSD drive). Bitlocker made it damn near impossible.

I even tried to reinstall Windows, but Lenovo's website kept locking up. Finally found the magic command-line incantation to disable Bitlocker. Zapped the whole thing and just installed Ubuntu.

The most useless waste of time since trying to figure out the exact right gcc flags to rebuild a library.

We re-watched the last quarter of the game against Serbia then this one. It was an amazing show of team-work. Then Curry stepped in (again) and put the rocket-boosters on.
