@[email protected] oh I see
Basically they see the Fediverse as a data breach with no actual control over what happen to data the moment it gets to other servers (actually true) and especially if GAFAM gets involved. I mean, I get this they want to stay super-private. But I think that private social networks is a bit naive as an idea

Screenshot from veklar website. It says "we're protecting you from tomorrow's Fediverse" meaning service like threads or others from META or Google potentially joining the Fediverse

@[email protected] they even made a cute little graphic including some niche softwares, so cute

What to choose between Lemmy, Mbin and PieFed, features-wise?
Since users and communities are equally accessible, I just need to know what are the pros and cons of them, I really can’t figure it out without a extensive time of use

@[email protected] when I post on a Lemmy community I always follow it first, so I should receive everything that is boosted in theory. For comparison, I do the same with Guppe groups and it works as you described (as long as the group is tagged)

Sharkey doesn’t fetche replies to Lemmy comments
I interact with Lemmy using my account on a Sharkey instance. It all works well except you only see direct comments to you post, while replies to them are not visible except you look at your post on a Lemmy instance
I’m not sure if federation with Lemmy has this issue with other software, however I may have seen a Lemmy post made by a Mastodon account, and replies were visible when seeing the post from the original Mastodon instance.
So this may be something related to -key softwares

ERRATA CORRIGE
Turns out I’m a little dumb and I read the K6 precautions incorrectly

RDT is not actually discouraged. They actually advice against spraying water directly on the metal parts of the grinder

Avoid spraying water directly onto any part of the grinder. You can perform RDT by spraying water on another object.

So there’s that. It is not so sensible to corrosion as I was firstly worried about. Yay

What hardware do you use for Nextcloud?
I’m willing to finally get my own cloud using #Nextcloud but I have zero clue about which hardware I should choose for home storage. It would be used for domestic stuff, such as photos, music, movies and files, for the whole family, not necessarily for work

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

@[email protected] never tried RDR, but I heard multiple times about that. I don’t think I’ll try it since the manufacturer explicitly advises against that technique, however I think I’d still prefer to clean it at least once a couple of days, so the hustle of assembly would remain. Fortunately seems like I’m getting used to it, they could have done better tho

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 months ago (2 children)

@[email protected] to be honest, it seems like there’s not general consensus about which material works better, so my guess is that they may give different results but they’re both good depending on what you like.
I’d also add that the grinder itself might be more important as the overall build quality and stability might have a role in the quality of grinding, as someone suggested that Porlex performs worse not because of the burr itself but because it is not secured well enough so it has some play side to side.
But yeah, as I said I was still happy with that, even if it was generally less comfortable to use

Moving from Porlex II to Kingrinder K6
So, I was perfectly happy with my Porlex mini II, as a I love specialty coffee but I definitely don’t understand yet the small nuances in coffee brewing.
But a couple of days ago my sister accidentally broke the ceramic burr. I was going to just buy the burr but I instead made a little research, suspecting I could get a better grinder. Eventually I landed on the Kingrinder K6 and I was able to receive it the very following day.

So, I’m using for just a couple of days, but the difference is immense.
The object itself is much bigger and HEAVIER, I couldn’t believe how much more robust it felt. Also is far more complex and sophisticated in its assembly, and the structure is more stable.

It’s very handy, firstly because it can easily grind much more coffee, much more quickly and easily. It also features the external grinding size adjustment with precise clicks easy to check thanks to the marks on the outside.

But the main difference is the resulting ground. At a first look it does look more evenly sized but you can’t really be sure. By just brewing it with a V60 the difference couldn’t be clearer.
With the Porlex, the coffee ground after brewing featured a mud-like smooth layer covering both the paper and the coarser particles. It almost disappeared with the K6, only the coarser ground is visible now. Also the brewing time got shorter, especially when brewing two cups of coffee at a time (500ml of water for 30g of coffee).

The only downside is the maintenance. The Porlex burr is made of ceramics, you can easily wash them with a toothbrush and water and make it completely white and clean again.
The K6 burr is made of metal, the manual strongly recommends to avoid water and just brush it, however due to the complexity of the mechanisms it takes a bit longer to disassemble it and definitely more hustle to reassemble it. In particular it requires a very tiny piece to be put back in place in the end which is particularly annoying. I think it may be a huge problem for people with lower hand mobility and strength, so I would appreciate if this process were a bit more accessible.

In a nutshell, it costs like 20€ more than Porlex but looks like a completely different category. I couldn’t recommend it more

@[email protected] @[email protected] Until now I’ve always been using Porlex mini II, but sadly I broke the burr. I was pretty happy about it but I learned it is generally considered as an inconsistent grinder, so I looked for an upgrade in my setup and K6 seemed a good choice.
To be honest I did notice a certain range of dimension in the Porlex ground, but the resulting coffee always seemed good enough for me. I’m curious about the difference with the K6

About a.gup.pe, I’m using Sharkey to post, so I don’t really know if lemmy supports the following of users. I guess it’s not possible, since Guppe groups are technically bot accounts, Lemmy shouldn’t be able to see them as communities

Kingrinder K1 K2 K3 K4 K5 and K6 comparison
This should be a whole article, it’s amazing

@[email protected] isn’t 320ml a little too much? Didn’t it came out too watered?

Do you know any coffee roasters accounts in the Fediverse?

Do you know Fediverse bots/accounts boosting posts in other languages than English?
My personal feed is heavily English-centred, I’d like to possibly get posts in other languages and have a wider perspective

Salt domes (www.foxyhole.io)

Salt domes
I don’t know if this is common knowledge.
Basically, underground in the deep of the Earth crust there is often a layer of salt rock, formed when salted water basins evaporated multiple times and get buried by sediments, slowly sinking into the crust due to tectonic activity.
Well, since salt rock has a much lower density than the surrounding rocks, it behaves exactly as a liquid. All around the globe, from the salt layer, immense bubbles and columns of salt called diapirs slowly move upwards, much like magma does, passing through layers of rock and bending them.
Where the bended layers touch the salt diapir some cavities form, making place to petroleum and natural gas to concentrate. On the surface, the bending of the rock layers is detectable through formations like hills but also depressions, created by the subsiding of the hill or by corrosion action by elements.
Where salt domes are found, humans open salt mines and build drilling plants to extract the underground hydrocarbons.

Please note that salt domes are a lot, like if the underground salt basins around the world “boiled” through the crust. If you look up the Zagro mountains in Iran and look at the southernmost part, you can easily spot from the satellite dozens of circular hills all of similar size, some of all even show so-called salt glaciers originated by salt coming out from the crust. Those are all salt diapers pushing the crust and creating hills, and even islands in the Persian Gulf

Currently, can you see #boosts on your #Pixelfed timeline?
On Pixelfed.social and other instances it seems like boosts are hidden. So you can share posts in Pixelfed and users using softwares like Mastodon or Misskey will see your boost, but from Pixelfed you won’t see them both from Pixelfed users and Fediverse users, and regardless if you activated them in the settings or use a different client. There are no official news about it so I’m trying to understand if this has something to do with Pixelfed as a software, with specific instances or specific accounts

Do you know roasteries that sell decaf coffee beans?
I’d like to brew coffee more often, occasionally in the evening, but I can’t because of caffeine, also I know people who definitely feel much worse effect I would be glad to offer a good pour over to sometimes, so I’m looking for some websites which sell a decent selection of decaf beans, preferably treated with the Swiss water process. Also I live in Italy so due to recent events it would much more convenient to buy from European sources

Meglio abbonarsi a Wired o Wired Italia?
Avrei voglia di abbonarmi alla rivista, inclusa quella cartacea, ma l’edizione USA ha un costo molto più alto di quella italiana, quindi mi viene il dubbio che la seconda sia più scarna di contenuti
