A genocide is more than an actual killing of people to eliminate their gene pool. Genocide also comes in the form of cultural and societal erasure, where the people may still exist, but in a colonized, "conforming" form that pays no heed to their origins.
Native Americans are a prime example; yes the US definitely murdered most of them. But those that weren't dead were mechanically relocated off of fertile ground, separated from family structures, and forced to "integrate" into Western society in such a way that it purged them of as much of their native culture as possible.
These days the tribes been able to reorganize, save and document some of their culture, and find a place for themselves in western society, but they are all still irreparably damaged as a people- rampant drug/alcohol abuse, abject poverty, disease, and short life expectancy is the norm in most majority-Native areas or reservations. In all of these possible respects, the US genocide of Native Americans was a success.
Hitler did not start off by immediately rounding up Jews into gas chambers. They started by ostracizing them, marking them and their businesses with stars, blaming them for economic problems, and gradually restricting their rights and travel and representation.
This is about to happen to trans people and gay people alike. They will always exist in humanity as a sect of the population, like they always have. Most of us (myself included as a bi man) will not be killed outright, although hate murders will undoubtedly reach a fever height with zero prosecution. But our mere existence will be completely erased from all of society, erased from all medical science, erased from all educational systems. We will be forced to conform to their gender and relationship roles or be forced to not exist at all, returning to an age of social dark corners that grow ever-smaller with the reach of the corporate surveillance state. That will be the genocide.
Which is a problem in of itself and why I will never own a new car of any marque. I will continue to own my old pre-2005 vehicles without data collection or GPS tracking and fix them until it is no longer feasible, and figure out how to custom electric swap the chassis when the time inevitably comes.
