In my opinion it's pointless to try to find meaning in popularity polling like this.
For decades I had the belief that maybe 60% of people on the opposite ends of the political spectrum - 30% per side - we're so so extreme in their beliefs and/or allegiance that they were essentially unreachable. No amount of reasoning or effort could change their minds. They were therefore not worth my energy, personally, to discuss politics with.
Now I'm convinced it's more like 45%, or even higher, at least on the right. The gap between the polling is immaterial: when it comes time to vote they could never imagine voting for the other side.
When every election of consequence comes down to 2% or less, and the best one could hope for is the other side doesn't show up due to lack of enthusiasm, that's a fucking sad place for a country to be.
Exactly. Headlines all too often portray groups as monoliths, applying the opinion of some as being the opinion of all.
I'm sure some are disagreeing, but I highly doubt all, or even a majority, disagree. Give the spin machine some time to do it's work and before you know it many will cheer the demise of Juneteenth, labor day, and MLK day.
