That’s honestly one of the funniest headlines I’ve seen in a while

Not just preparing, it's happening. I'm sure everyone's heard about r/pics and r/gifs opening but only posting John Oliver, but here are some links to other mod posts for some subreddits that have been forced to reopen (some of them make for fairly depressing reading):

  • r/steam forced to reopen or lose their subreddit
  • r/tall again forced to reopen under threat of being removed as mods, users are posting John Longiver pics
  • r/watchpeopledieinside forced to reopen but will keep pushing for change
  • r/piracy's top mods have been demoted to force them to reopen
  • r/theyknew forced to reopen but only if the first image in every post is a protest image
  • r/horny is now a "christian minecraft server"
  • r/scams forced to reopen but are changing their policies to deliberately mod more aggressively and slowly.
  • r/iphone is posting only pics of Tim Cook “looking dashing”.

plastic clip with a spring mechanism that lets the user squeeze the device and two light channels: one to direct a flashlight to your finger and the other to direct the reflected light to the camera for image processing

That’s so fucking clever.

I honestly can't believe he's being so egotistical about it. Insults mods as "landed gentry" and users' concerns as "noise" - those are literally the people that have created this "valuable dataset" he's coveting so greedily.

The only real problem with Reddit is Reddit Inc.

You're right, Lemmy/etc represent a great opportunity for the users and mods to regain control over the communities they build.

Thanks I've been trying to fill in those claims with links so this one is great :)

This appears at the top of the page until you dismiss it (at least for me): https://i.imgur.com/Uo3t2TI.jpg

Here’s what it links to: https://mods.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/16693988535309

Yesterday they were linking to some much more blatant propaganda/history whitewash, here's the link: https://www.redditinc.com/blog/apifacts

Haha yeah well I didn't say they were doing a good job of it!

If it wasn't hurting them they wouldn't be doing damage control.

It's working, keep it up.

Sort of. Digg’s implosion was much more immediate, the changes directly impacted normal users so it was easier to mobilise people, and at the time Reddit was a bit more mature and easier to understand than Lemmy/etc is now.

My guess is we’ll see much more of a Digg-like exodus once Apollo stops working and the average user sees an impact.

That’s a fantastic response. Reddit can’t oust the mods for “opting out”, and they can’t claim the sub is unmoderated. Plus it keeps people’s minds on what’s going on. Great idea.

Yeah I noticed the same thing, comments and votes on lemmy.ml posts are being lost. It seems like other servers have the same problem (so it seems correct to say that it's a lemmy.ml problem rather than a lemm.ee problem).

However this seems like a big deal for Lemmy's federation as a whole - people are repeatedly told they can join any server and they don't need to make an account on lemmy.ml, but actually while these problems persist that's not really true...
