I think that it's important for users to know where they are.

and I think that it's critical to fight technological illiteracy, raise awareness about how it works, who's developing it, who's paying for it. it doesn't need to be complex, but the main concept need to be explained, and thus let users be actors of their digital life.

in my opinion it's important to take any opportunity to do so.

the online courses from the totem project about digital security and privacy are very well done and easy to follow, if anyone is interested:

I don't really agree with this because the fediverse is not only interconnected by a technology (ActivityPub) but also by some shared values, like inclusivity and kindness to each other.

so for me it's important to agree to embrace those values if you want to be part of it. it's not just a replacement for other platforms. users that experienced the twitter migration know what I'm talking about.

if an instance becomes toxic, il will simply be de-federated and continue to live on its on , on a secular island (a good example of this is thruth.social, who is not accessible from mastodon.social for obvious reasons). I really don't want this to happen to here.

so please let's keep what was on reddit on reddit and build something new here.

and the fediverse is also about value of inclusivity. it goes beyond a technological ideal.

The question I would like to see on top of that is: would my action contribute to a single, mono thematic and normatif point of view or promote the emergence of other discourse and discussion even tho I don’t agree with them at the first glance?

you have to take into account that kbin.social is not yet totally federated with other instances, because the website is under a Cloudflare protection. this is to let the main dev focus on more important thing that dealing with a direct attack on the website servers. it will be re-federated gradually.

other instances like https://fedia.io are federated if I'm correct.

this seems to be the consensus.

the question of reputation points have been ask a dozen a time this last days and It seems that it's just a code issue.

not answering directly to your post, just having a reflection about the state of things: if you check the thread we are in you can see that I'm almost always downvoted and you are always upvoted. just scroll back from here.

this is exactly the issue with this downvote culture inherited from reddit. the promotion of a single point of view and the exclusion of anyone trying to express something different from the constructed culture.

I'm all about deconstructing this.

yes it's pretty ironic.

go check my profile, it will make you feel better 🤣

you can undo a boost by clicking on it a seconde time, no? and you'll have a confirmation with the term boost being underscored

boosts are like retweet. it improves the visibility of a thread. it's like sharing it with all your followers + promoting it to the top category.

I boost content that I want to be seen. I upvote content as a kind gesture for the author. I downvote content that is really not appropriate but just not enough to be reported.
