These are so nice, reminds me of the seasonal Mishra’s Factory and Urza lands from Antiquities

The destroy target creature one is interesting. My regex isn’t good enough to get this in one nice query but it looks like there are 3 cards that have just this rules text:

  • Eviscerate - 3B
  • Impale - 2BB
  • Murder - 1BB

If it’s a black card I can’t imagine they go BB on it, but maybe BBB for some kind of lore reason. Maybe it’s 4B for limited?

My other thought is that it’s in a new color or color combo. Maybe a new 1BW murder?

Not a bad Gaea’s Cradle in certain archetypes, I just don’t know if this is better than Nykthos ever though. I guess in multicolor tribal decks like humans.

Yeah good question, this is definitely one of the highest of all time. Demonic Tutor sold for $168k which I think was the previous record until Force of Will sold for $350k a short while ago.

That one is so far and above anything else that I can’t imagine anything other than maybe Black Lotus or some combo of iconic art + special interest from the buyer will ever crack that but who knows.

I think I like this art more than the original, it just doesn’t feel very “UG” to me though. He looks insanely menacing here.

I love comparing creatures’ artwork when their P/T is the same. How on earth does Cleanup Crew trade with this guy in combat for instance 😜

Psychic Frog, Kozilek’s Command, and Springheart Nantuko… womp womp.

Wow a new Locus, never thought we’d see another one. Interesting effect.

This seems kinda nuts, every eldrazi spawn you have is now a Serra Angel?

[–] andrew@mtgzone.com 2 points 1 year ago

Wow this is a pretty big addition to modern, seems great in Yawgmoth

[–] andrew@mtgzone.com 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is this the first time they’ve ever printed “this ability only triggers twice each turn?”

[–] andrew@mtgzone.com 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Seems pretty versatile for eldrazi/tron decks. Even if X is 0 you can draw a card and exile a creature token for cmc 2 which seems decent.

Otherwise this is instant speed reanimator/grave hate, ramp, card filtering, and/or creature removal and in tron it feels negligible to get X pretty high if need be. If it hit creatures and planeswalkers I think it'd be nuts.

Yeah significant upgrade, 1 mana less and it hits planeswalkers. I guess that’s the difference between modern and standard.

Troll and Toad has been one of the biggest and longest running gaming stores selling MTG. Sadly they're going to stop selling all Magic singles and sealed product (!) as of January 1, 2024.

The reasons they cite are that:

  • MTG is less profitable now vs other games
  • Reserved list reprints in 30A "spooked" them
  • The "constant reprinting of valuable cards and the number of variants of these cards made buylist pricing difficult and sometimes resulted in buying cards at a loss."

"Magic is not profitable enough for our company to continue carrying right now," said Burns to ICv2. "Sometimes it felt like I was only stocking Magic product because I loved the game so much."

The Beast, Deathless Prince - 2BR
Legendary Creature — Demon (Rare)
When you cast this spell, gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap it. It gains menace and haste until end of turn.
The Beast enters the battlefield tapped with six stun counters on it.
Whenever a creature deals combat damage to its owner, untap The Beast and draw a card.

MaRo goes over all of the decision making processes for UB sets, particularly how they choose which other IPs to go with:

  • Overlap with Magic players or potential Magic players
  • Elements that translate well to Magic cards
  • A partner that wants to work with us

He also spends a good bit time discussing how they "[make] sure you capture what people love about the property." For WHO this became a variation of Partner for commanders partnering with a "companion." Kind of annoying they went with that term given companions are already a thing from Ikoria!

Twice Upon a Time - 4UU
Sorcery (Rare)
Cast this spell only if you control two or more Doctors.
Take an extra turn after this one. Exile Twice Upon a Time.
//
Unlikely Meeting - 2U
Sorcery -- Adventure
Search your library for a Doctor card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.
