Sweet card!

I wonder if the opponent static should say rounded down instead? Too strong? This would shut down every single-token creation by opponent, 2 tokens would still make 1 but 3 would also just create 1 token. It seems fine on such a high costed card but not sure how far that is.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Had to look up Incorporate, what a strange ability. It adds those costs/abilities to the card.

In this case, the card becomes green, costs 1G more, and gets +4/+4 perpetually added to its stats.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Throwback to [[Massacre Wurm]]! This thing gets cycling but loses the -2 life trigger which I think makes Massacre Wurm much better.

Curious why not just add that card instead.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

[[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]]

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Seems great if you generate a ton of clues as the guaranteed gas for 1 mana is nice. Just not sure what deck wants this for 4 mana.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I initially thought this was a thoroughly white ability, like with [[Odric, Lunarch Marshall]] and others but it looks like some recent commander sets have done this for green too: [[Majestic Myriarch]] and [[Animus of Predation]].

Looks like black gets it too with [[Soulflayer]] and [[Urborg Scavengers]] so yeah I guess not color specific.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Wow what a crazy wheel effect. Not sure why you would play this other than for the craziness but looks fun at least. Arena devs really leaning into the digital experience here which seems cool for Alchemy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Oh I see! Yeah that's a way better static then, love that. Would love to see something like this in MH3 as well tbh as it sounds like they’re pushing eldrazi again.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Love the targeted hate here! Cool design.

I don't know a ton of eldrazi cards but is the static supposed to hit a lot of them? The biggest one that comes to mind is the opponent's creatures not triggering [[Eldrazi Mimic]] I think but I might me reading that static ability wrong.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Same initial reaction! But 2 thoughts after:

  • Arabian Nights is one of my favorite all-time sets and while they're not exactly the same, I love(d) cards like [[King Suleiman]] and [[Ali from Cairo]]. Leonardo da Vinci is a famous historical figure but he has a bit of mystique to him like those ARN cards and created similar good feelings for me for some reason. Cards from P3K like [[Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon"]] were also historical figures I believe and feel really cool too as cards.

  • I guess it's possible others feel that way about Teddy Roosevelt but I don't at all and I really hope real people like this are capped at far off historical figures like Leonardo or ancient leaders/thinkers! I don't know why exactly but they feel different.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

"Spicy" made me think these were going to be some cool rogue decks but the RUG vehicles list at least looks super fun. Not a ton of the Pioneer meta really interests me but I could definitely get into that RUG (really GRu) list.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

This card seems awesome and I hope it helps revitalize the non-domain zoo decks, I love the naya ones that were much bigger a while ago.

WOTC is back with their latest marketing survey, this one for Commander Masters.

I have a bunch of playable or medium value cards that I want access to but would be way unnecessary store in binders, and have been looking at long card storage boxes/cases. I've mostly used those cardboard BCW boxes for bulk storage but I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation or newer product here for a more "premium" one?

So far it just seems to be Ultimate Guard's "xenoskin" series (like the Arkhive and Superhive, etc.) and then various one-off products from other companies, like Card Guardian, that don't hold enough or are more designed to hold a few deck boxes.

I'd love a leatherette version of something, similar to Ultra Pro's Premium Pro-Binders, but they don't seem to exist! Bundle boxes are also pretty nice but it'd be great to have something more premium. Does anyone use anything they really like?

Looks like Amazon now has the regular LTR bundles for $65. With this foil copy of The One Ring going for ~$45 on TCG Player that's roughly $20 for 8 set boosters, some lands, the die, and storage box which isn't too bad. The price of The One Ring should probably drop with this but still seems pretty good!

Surprising level of transparency here when it's very easy to just ignore these kinds of questions, even if it's a bit roundabout.

"[W]e have to take into account numerous factors to make sure that boosters packs are equally desirable. One of the biggest factors is the overall average powerful level of the cards."

Translation: no one would (theoretically) buy "under-powered" Standard boosters if they were the same price as "high-powered" masters boosters. This doesn't really appreciate players who want to draft or want Standard cards (and would therefore buy Standard packs regardless) but I'm sure they have people there doing this all day every day.

Bit of fluff in this but some of the insights from Mark in this Lessons Learned. I particularly like the nuked ability, Debt, from Guilds of Ravnica as well as his lesson in WAR about making sure players get what they're expecting.

  • Unstable: not everything happens quickly. Sometimes the key to success is to have a vision and slowly work toward it, even if it takes great time. This is not only true of Un- sets but also mechanics, themes, and set ideas.... So many of my successes started with great doubt from the rest of R&D. The key is realizing that good ideas can win out, but they require a lot of nurturing and refining.

  • Dominaria: the importance of iteration. "We began vision design not knowing how we were mechanically executing on our theme [of history]. We got to solutions, not because we had a sudden epiphany of how to do it, but because we took ideas and worked on them." Mark uses Saga and historic as examples.

  • Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance: overall system and structure is more important than any one design or mechanic. "Something that works well in a vacuum but doesn't integrate with the rest of the set is a problem." Mark goes over an unused Orzhov mechanic called Debt (certain spells give debt counters to your opponent and at the end of the turn, your opponent could pay 1 for each debt counter they wanted to get rid of and would lose 1 life if they had any remaining debt counters).

  • War of the Spark: you can't fight your theme "I was designing a Planeswalker war set, but the audience wanted a Planeswalker war set. I was focusing on the wrong thing.... You must understand what your set is asking for and then figure out how to bring that theme to life. The best Magic designs deliver on the thing that players want most."

Last night, Brook Trafton, the Canadian Magic: The Gathering fan who originally opened a 1 of 1 variant The One Ring card . . . revealed that he sold the card to Post Malone.

This is Mark's 20th (!) anniversary as head designer! He lists out a bunch of highlights and lessons from each of the sets in the previous year, a few that stood out:

  • There needs to be more synergy between sets. This has been true since blocks went away and one I really hope they improve upon (or just bring blocks back!).

  • Many players liked having a set (Brother's War) that looked back at one of Magic's greatest stories. "Players liked seeing old characters they recognized in card form.... They also liked how the design made the artifacts feel like a throwback while still applying modern design technology."

  • The Transformer cards (in Brothers War) felt out of place. Happy he identified this one. "[T]he core of the set for many players was nostalgia. These players felt seeing cards of a different IP flew in the face of that."

  • All of the lessons from Aftermath! Set was too small, most (all?) players didn't like paying the same amount for fewer cards, the set was sold as story-focused but not much happened story-wise, and many players were unhappy about Planeswalkers losing their sparks.
