Two books I found really useful at the time:

The Little LISPer by Daniel P Friedman

Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier

Both are rather niche, but helped me understand general computing and design concepts.

Indeed. While most of the time a fin sighting would be harmless, that area is within territory covered by great white sharks. In 2021 a woman swimming at Margaree Island was bitten by a great white that likely mistook her for a seal.

As waters warm, mako and great white sharks have been spending more time close to shore over the past decade.

Just like with any animal at the top of the food chain, it’s better to use caution than to tempt statistics.

How many people did they employ to intercept $378k of “mostly ED drug knockoffs”?

It’s good that they blocked unregulated drugs, but it really feels like they missed way more than they found.

Or maybe Putin.

If it didn’t repel Orban out of office, it still needs some improvement.

“This is ICE! Round up all your undocumented day laborers”

“Sir, I’m too busy for that right now. If you and your men can help me pick all these tomatoes, I’ll have time to tell you where they’re all hiding.”

— 8 hours later —

“Thanks for helping get all the produce in. As you can see, we no longer have any undocumented day laborers, so now we depend on regular ICE raids to keep the farm going. Have a nice day!”

These four North Koreans remain at large, and the ‘Rewards for Justice’ program has announced $5,000,0000 in rewards for credible information about their current location.

Wow… so PRK can make just as much by saying “here they are, at an office in Pyongyang!” as they made via this entire 5-year scheme.

…for situations where people are providing service above and beyond what you’re already paying for through other means.

For me, this requires physical interaction between me and the person. If I can hand them a tip, it will be 10-15%, just like in the 90s.

If I’m in Starbucks and when I order something a prompt comes up on the machine asking how much I’d like to tip, it will always be 0 unless I’m asking staff to come deliver my order to me outside instead of picking it up myself. They should already be being paid a fair wage for the work they do behind the counter, and if I find out they aren’t, I’ll take my business elsewhere.

I wonder how much of that can be traced back to Broadcom acquiring VMWare?

And those who win in court… have no guarantee that the federal administration won’t round them up again in the future and put them through the entire process again.

It’s a challenge when even the English words twist the thinking on the topic… “repatriating” makes all sorts of assumptions about what people desire to happen.
