I use Delta Chat exclusively to chat with my family, I don't even have WhatsApp installed.

Delta Chat has most of the features you need for communication the only missing thing is integrated calls that cause the phone to ring, which is not a deal breaker for me since I don't call often, used the jitsi meet integration once with them was a bit messy to get my mom etc to figure out how to use jitsi meet in the browser while explaining via voice messages in Delta Chat, but I think adding integrated calls is in the roadmap

Meanwhile me not giving a F about this news because I use CalyxOS and the feature to auto-restart the phone on inactivity with fine customizable time and not a fixed 3 days exist since a long time already there

That is a "they" issue, they don't allow to use their email server with your own email client of your choice which sucks, better use other email service. You don't need to use your email account tho, you can register without providing any information and it will automatically create a random anonymous email account for you, much better than the protonmail one, for free and without sending limits and with blazing FAST instant delivery

It is easy to disable, just follow this basic steps:

  1. uninstall WhatsApp
  2. install and use Delta Chat
  3. Enjoy 🎉

The purpose is already said in the title: private chats for the family

How you don't understand the use case of chatting with the family?

As many other chat apps out there, if you meant the "why this one and not X?" Well there are other acceptable options out there, the advantage of this one compared to WhatsApp, Telegram and co. Is that it doesn't depend on phone numbers or any private data, getting started with the app is painless and smooth, no SMS verification no captcha solving or complex registration, just set your name and start chatting. It is decentralized and anonymous, while having a nice polished UI easy to use on the level of WhatsApp and Telegram, unlike most other alternatives out there

One special feature is the ability to use in-chat mini-apps that are completely "p2p e2ee" between chat members without depending on any server hosting it and working offline first, among such apps: collaborative editor pads, checklists/to-do lists, shopping lists, split bills with friends, chess and other mini-games etc

No need bud no need for additional app, no need for unencrypted backup files exposed on filesystem public storage, just use Delta Chat bud, just use Delta Chat

Go to your "Saved Messages" chat there you can save notes or use mini-apps in private, click the paperclip attachment button select the apps button you will see the mini-apps list, some useful apps are the to-do list app to track things you need to do or shopping lists, and the one called TOTP is the one I was talking about for 2FA PINs, the Time tracking app is also useful

FairMail is for classic unsecure email, DeltaChat is for secure end-to-end encrypted chatting

I used it for a while, it is quite good, but I recently switched to a webxdc (in-chat mini-app) in Delta Chat which allows me to access the codes from any device where I have Delta Chat installed and adding a new token in one device synchronizes to all other devices this also mean that my tokens are safe if one of my devices die and I will not lose them. All of this is without depending on a server holding your data
