Blocked it ๐Ÿ‘

Two other communities on the list, one from feddit.rocks and one from lemm.ee, seem to be on the list too given that they're also unblockable, and should probably stay that way given that unlike the thunder one, they seem to target specific Lemmy users.

I guess I'll ask the Arctic developer if there's a way to detect instance-blocked communities to filter those two communities from my list as well.

Arctic (iOS and MacOS only, unfortunately) has built-in swipe actions for blocking and unblocking at the community and instance levels.

In addition to the standard federated community list, it also has a separate Lemmy community list that instead pulls its data from Lemmy Explorer. Since this instance doesn't use Lemmy Federate, it's both a useful means of finding communities that aren't federated to this one yet, and also a useful means of blocking any uninteresting or otherwise unwanted ones. You can then have it filter out communities you've blocked, to avoid having to scroll past them again after.

Took some time to decide which communities I did or didn't want, but down to 992 unblocked communities now, or hopefully 988-ish if instance-blocked ones can filtered out too.

To maximize the value of my All feed, I preemptively block communities whose posts I don't think I'll find interesting, minimizing how much All feed scrolling I end up needing to do.

While I don't need to block communities that are already instance-blocked, I'd still rather they not clutter the app's Lemmy Explorer feed, hence why I had asked the developer to filter out communities from blocked instances. If it's possible to tell which communities are blocked at the instance level, I'm hoping that the Arctic developer can extend the current filtering to communities blocked at the instance level to de-clutter the Lemmy Explorer list further.

Is there a way to tell which communities have been removed from an instance in that manner?

The Arctic app automatically removes communities from blocked instances from its integrated Lemmy Explorer list, but seemingly not blocked communities from unblocked instances, unfortunately.

The title is misleading, given that it's not being directed towards the delivery of any new aid, but rather paying for aid that's already been delivered.

No treaty ever awarded the Kuril Islands to the Soviet Union.

While I wholeheartedly think Ukraine is deserving of additional armies to defend its territorial integrity, and that claims of nuclear annihilation are used more as a Russian fear-mongering tool rather than being realistic in any manner, I certainly think Ukraine can win the war with enough arms, particularly if it increases its targeting of Russian energy infrastructure that funds Russia's ability to conduct warfare in the first place.

It will indeed be harder without American support, but when the alternative for the Ukrainian people is ethnic cleansing, it's no surprise that Zelenskyy remains popular three years into the war.

The truth is not propaganda

While I have my opinion and you have yours, Zelensky's popular support increasing to an even greater majority than before, not decreasing, after his defense of Ukrainian sovereignty during his visit to the White House, is telling of Ukrainian support for the continued defense of their sovereignty from Russian invaders.

when I'm just telling the truth

Again, you have your opinion and I have mine, the difference is that like propaganda outlets such as Fox News and Newsmax, you're pulling far-right, anti-democratic claims out of a hat and giving no reliable proof to show for it.

What exactly do you think Russian control of Ukraine would look like?

Russia has already kidnapped thousands of Ukrainian children, covered up the torturing of murder of Ukrainian civilians, needlessly targeted Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, and claimed that the Ukrainian identity is a fabricated offshoot off being Russian.

With such contempt for the linguistic, cultural, and self-deterministic rights of the Ukrainian people, anyone who for a second believes that Russia would allow for free and fair elections in Ukraine when it already targets political opponents, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of speech is either naive or intentionally deceitful.

[โ€“] Zedstrian 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

That just means Ukraine needs more support, not less, and that more Americans should shift their resources from attacking LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, and minorities, and instead promote democracy in democratic countries that actively request such assistance, rather than in countries that don't.

The EU, not the US, is now the leader of the free world, and every day the US becomes more similar to Russia than the EU is a day where millions of people will continue to needlessly suffer just to stuff the pockets of a handful of oligarchs.

Not only are you promoting defeatist propaganda, but you're also implying that patriotic Ukrainians have violent tendencies, something that's quite rich when they're the ones defending their homeland, not trampling stolen territory and kidnapping and murdering innocent civilians.

Promoting "peace in our time" that only leads to another war later, as was the case before World War II, is not an effective solution, and parallels the same fascist mentality encouraging Palestinians to leave Gaza "for their own safety".

Rather than promoting fascism, the solution is to participate in Starmer's 'coalition of the willing', even without the participation or support of the US, and increase military aid to Ukraine and tariffs on Russia until it becomes too costly for Russia, both in terms of casualties and energy infrastructure losses.

Nothing less will promote a lasting peace.

Personally, my main Linux usage so far has been the Steam Deck, which uses an immutable version of Arch Linux on which Flatpaks are the primary means of software installation.

The other main multi-distribution package formats seem to be Snaps and AppImages. AppImages seem to work anywhere, due to being self-contained, while Snaps have a dependency that appears to make them a viable alternative to flatpaks on systems other than the Steam Deck, which can't easily make use of Snaps due to the immutability of SteamOS. There's also Nix packages, though they don't seem to be as prevalent as the other three.

Otherwise, most major Linux distributions also have their own native package formats, such as Deb packages for Debian and Ubuntu, Pacman for Arch Linux, and RPM for Red Hat and Fedora.

Not sure how difficult it is to maintain different Linux packages types for a program, but thanks for your effort to bring Blorp to Linux!

Will the Linux version be available as a Flatpak?

While many great puzzle games have a fixed number of levels, I'd like to find more with procedurally-generated levels to maximize replay value. Aside from Minesweeper games, so far I've found the following ones:

  • Hexcells Infinite
  • InfiniPicross 2.0
  • KNIGHTS
  • Lines Infinite
  • Linklight
  • LOOP

Trying to help my grandparents find a new detective show to watch. For reference, here's what they've already watched:

Bosch Bosch: Legacy Beyond Paradise Death in Paradise Elementary Endeavour Father Brown Lewis Lie to Me Longmire Marple Midsomer Murders Murdoch Mysteries NCIS Poirot Shetland The Brokenwood Mysteries The Mentalist

While they generally seem to prefer British detective shows, I'm not sure which ones are left to recommend to them.

In navigating Lemmyverse for potential communities to subscribe to, it would be helpful to be able to redirect links to my home instance in a new tab to facilitate sorting through multiple communities at a time. Ideally, the option would be implemented with the ability to enable or disable either of the two context menu items to minimize context menu cluttering.

While TorrentLeech is great, the demise of FileList makes me want to diversify my catalogue of tracker options in case something were to happen to it as well. Popular releases are usually available on public trackers for a while, with some releases findable on usenet as well, but are there any easily-joinable private trackers as worthwhile as TorrentLeech?

While many popular English language TV shows seem to be dubbed into other widely-spoken languages (looking for French, personally), the releases that include those audio tracks unfortunately often either have lower bitrates than their English-only counterparts (which only include subtitles for other languages) or only have one of several seasons that made its way from the scene to usenet or a torrent tracker. Therefore, to avoid needing to download two variants of the same content and merge the sought combination of their video/audio tracks, is there a simpler means of acquiring dubbed audio of movies and TV shows?

Language-specific public trackers (Torrent911 and YGGTorrent for French) seem to be a reliable means of acquiring alternate releases of movies containing dubbed audio that otherwise are identical in length to the original English releases, making them mergeable, but they seem to be lacking in terms of dubbed releases for anything but the most popular movies and TV shows. Usenet fills the gaps somewhat, but as language-specific private torrent trackers seem hard to gain access to, I haven't found a reliable source for most dubbed releases and dubbed audio tracks.

Having already configured a VLC-powered Google TV configuration with USB hard drives for a relative without the router or download speed needed for reliable streaming, I'm now trying to configure a similar setup for another relative with a non-smart TV and an even slower download speed.

The only requirements for such a device would be the ability to be controlled entirely with a remote, a USB-A or USB-C port compatible with USB hubs and media storage devices, and the reliable playback of videos of assorted codecs and file extensions. As Roku, FireTV, and Android/Google TV streaming sticks tend to be plastered with ads as a means of promoting content within their ecosystems, an alternative HDMI device that minimizes the number of button presses between turning on the TV and and reaching the navigation menu for videos on attached USB storage devices would be preferred.
