Somebody liked the Motörhead rock band, maybe (Lead vocalist's name was Lemmy)?

Today, a bunch of new instances appeared in the top of the user count list. It appears that these instances are all being bombarded by bot sign-ups.

Yup, I noticed this as well.

Hopefully the mods of the instances will notice this and remove these accounts quickly! Despite this, I think the mods of all instances, and of all communities, had better brace themselves for incoming spam and hate speech.

Well, that's a brilliant workaround until this is fixed. Thanks!

Freedom of expression is very much a two way street, and does not mean 'free from consequences' if someone says something vile.

I am quite free to make rules, and enforce them, for the communities I moderate, just as someone else is free to find a forum where, for example, they can express vile racist, homophobic slurs.

Tolerance cannot extend to tolerating others' intolerance, or discourse is not possible.

I noticed a bunch of almost new instances shoot up by several thousand users yesterday as well. My guess is people are using bots to create thousands of accounts, and this is gonna result in all manner of issues soon enough.

That wouldn't explain where the 6112 users suddenly came from.

I noticed this as well. Within just a few hours a whole bunch of newer instances have suddenly shot up by several thousand users each. My guess is that people are using bots to take advantage of the sign-up bugs and are creating thousands of bot account to use in various annoying and nefarious ways in the near future.

On the main page of your instance, at the top, you'll see a link that says 'communities'. Click that.

Of course, this will only get you the communities on that particular instance. If you want a list of all communities on Lemmy go to https://browse.feddit.de or https://lemmyverse.net

I use an LLM to edit everything I write.

May I invite you to consider the pitfalls of such an approach?

Does this mean I have to label everything as LLM-generated?

Yes, that would be reasonable imo

Came across a reference to it on Reddit. I didn't do anything at the time, but when I came across two or three more references to it just before the blackout I thought I'd give it a try.

Yes, that is one of the features of being federated. Kbin and Lemmy and Mastadon (and others) can all federate with each other, so posts and comments are all shared. It doesn't really matter if you're on Kbin or Lemmy, you can see the same communities/magazines and comments for the most part, and interact regardless of which one you are currently logged in to.

Hoo boy, what a terrible and biased editorial, full of inaccuracies and incorrect implications! It's good of you to show it to us here as a reminder of the kind of dishonesty being spread around.

Uh…there are a lot of people with 5 day old Lemmy accounts, there was literally just a mass influx.

Yup. Me included.

But that doesn't address my point in responding to the question which was wondering about tankies and had the implication this may have come from an established tankie poster on that instance.

Your account is one week old.

Exactly.

Hell, most of the active users of Lemmy before the past week were posting content like this.

Exactly. Hence my remark.
