I think they used to do it in English as well. For example I remember Jane Austen using both twenty-one and one-and-twenty. So I'm guessing it used to be the same as in German, then for some time you could use both and now one-and-twenty is not used anymore.
EXACTLY, WE'RE JUST HUMANS PRETENDING TO BE ROBOTS AND TOTALLY NOT ROBOTS! JUST SOME VERY HUMAN FUN.
I read Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain at some point during the First World War centenary. I'm also roughly 100 years younger than Vera Brittain, so I was very close to her age during WW1. I knew the facts of WW1 before, but it hit me really hard to think about a whole generation of young people (of the countries involved) having their youth drowned in a war. And the pointlessness of it all. It made me really grateful for the circumstances I was lucky enough to grow up in.
One example that comes to my mind was a week or two ago when several posts were very prominent on some large instance (I don't remember which one it was) that were about using the word "female(s)" as a noun. Most of the comments were about how women are overreacting and "it's just a word" while the few women who explained why they don't like it were downvoted and harassed. It didn't exactly feel welcoming or like the opinions of women were respected. It took quite some time before the posts were taken down and they had collected a lot of upvotes and comments.
Another thing I noticed is that whenever I post or comment something that can even remotely be linked to feminism, I will get a lot more downvotes than with anything else I post. Sometimes mentioning that I'm a woman is enough. The same is true for other people's comments and posts. Of course votes matter much less than open misogyny (and usually the downvoters are a minority) but they make the few women here even less visible.
I luckily haven't had any negative experience that was aimed directly at me here yet. So no creepy messages or harassment aimed at me personally. But I have witnessed some discussions, comments or threads that were anything from uncomfortable to downright sexist. My main complaint is that I often don't know who to turn to on such occasions. Some mods react pretty quickly when you report something but more than once I reported something and nothing happened. And then what? Do I have to directly contact the admins of the instance? What if they don't care? Contact my instance's admins?
I know the federated nature of lemmy makes this a difficult problem. But I hope we will find some solution that doesn't leave women having to block lots of communities to feel safe here and thus being somewhat excluded and pushed into safe spaces at the edges of lemmy.
PS is Pferdestärke, which is just horsepower in German. I think CH is the same in French, and CV... Italian? So maybe the other ones also all mean HP. I don't know why they put all of them there, but maybe it's because since it's not a SI unit, there is no official abbreviation everyone knows.
Edit: Just looked it up and I was wrong, they are actually different units, even though horse related. Even HP (747.7 W) and PS (735.5 W) are slightly different. What a mess, that's why we need SI units.
