ASD is a heterogeneous disorder, both etiologically and in terms of clinical presentation, and individuals with ASD demonstrate a wide spectrum of abilities and challenges. While the etiology of ASD is complex and still remains largely unknown, this condition is likely the result of the interactive effects of genetic and environmental risk factors (Lai et al. 2014; Schaefer 2016; Tchaconas and Adesman 2013).
