I played the crap out of the first one for 3 years or so, took a couple year break, then when I came back to it, I had $100 or so worth of DLC I was missing. I couldn't get enthusiastic about it again after that.

Same here. There are quite a few games I would have never purchased had I not been able to pirate it first. Piracy acts as a demo of sorts for me. If I actually like the game, I almost always buy it.
