Trump put tariffs on Canada, Mexico and the European Union. And they all negotiate with him beforehand. Trump accused Canada of worsening the opioid addiction epidemic in the US and taxed the country +35%; Mexico too, Trump accused Mexico of collaborating with its drug cartels to target the US. +30% tariffs. Meanwhile, he taxed Europe +30% for not opening businesses in the US.

Russia also defended Brazil and took a swipe at the US. A day after Trump announced a 50% surcharge on Brazilian products, Russia's deputy foreign minister, Serguei Riabkov, suggested that the BRICS could expand even further According to Riabkov, partner countries such as Bolivia, Cuba, Malaysia, Vietnam and others can bring “added value” to the bloc and strengthen the multilateral front. The speech was seen as a diplomatic response to US tariffs, which are trying to isolate Brazil and attack the BRICS for geopolitical reasons. With the bloc more united, Brazil gains support against US blackmail.

China has sent a direct message to the US: “tariffs are not weapons of intimidation”. Spokeswoman Mao Ning said that tariffs should not be used as a form of coercion or interference in internal affairs. The statement was made on the 11th at a press conference in Beijing. Beijing reacted by saying that “sovereign equality and non-interference” are UN principles and that trade wars benefit no one. The criticism also targets the threat of a surcharge against countries aligned with the BRICS. At a meeting in ASEAN, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that American tariffs are trying to prevent the growth of countries in Southeast Asia. Cambodia, which was slapped with a 36% tariff, was cited as an example of Washington's pressure.
One of the most humorous fallouts of Trump's "get Bolsonaro out of jail" 50% tariff to hit the Brazilian media so far, involves a strip club in Fortaleza, which is now charging a 50% extra surcharge for American sex tourists. FAFO.
Does this seem absolutely insane to anybody else? It might be the weed I may have just now, but this realization blew my mind
Tbh, this sort of happened in Venezuela. The Venezuelan Elite/Bourgeois did everything possible to remove Chavez, a military coup, a legislative coup and even a general strike organized by the gusano-aligned trade unions. When Chavez's goverment, and his supporters, survived all these attempts, from 2002/3 forward a part of the Bourgeoisie decided to ally themself with the Chavista goverments. The USA and Right-Wing in Venezuela nicknamed them Bolibourgeoisie
Lots of Venezuelan, Colombian and Syrian Bankers and Businessmen helped Maduro and Chavez deal with the sanctions and crisis. Pretty sure the family that owns Globovisión is very pro-Chavismo (Which reminds me of Ricardo Belmont in Peru, who owns Viva TV and several radio stations. He used to be a neoliberal, but since 2019 he has become a big fan of AMLO and has decided to adopt a more center-left position. He was very close to Pedro Castillo's government and used his radio stations to support Castillo).
Though it's still sad to see him so thin I grew up seeing him bigger
While he is older, I also believe that the fact that he had a very serious laryngeal cancer (which is why his voice sounds different) in 2011, the stress of being illegally arrested and seeing his second wife die because of it, really affected his health.

@[email protected] do you have any info/theory on this?
Lula makes fun of Bolsonaro and says tariffs are based on “lies”. During an event in Espírito Santo about the Mariana dam, the PT leader made fun of what was supposed to be a conversation between Eduardo Bolsonaro and Donald Trump, with the former pleading for his father's freedom.
"So I want to say, with all due respect to President Trump, you are misinformed, very misinformed. The United States does not have a trade deficit with Brazil. It is Brazil that has a trade deficit with the United States. Just so you have an idea, in 15 years, between trade and services, we have a deficit of 410 billion dollars with the United States. It's up to us to tax him. Now, what is the reason he gives for taxing us? Firstly, he's fighting a lie that the United States doesn't have a deficit with Brazil. Secondly, what is his logic?
[Lula does a voice mimicking Trump]: "Oh, pwease don't presecute Bolsonaro, pwease stops this immediately. Stop this immediately!"
[Lula returns to his normal voice]: Because the 'thing' [Jair Bolsonaro] sent a son [Eduardo Bolsonaro] who was a congressman away from the Congress to go there and ask:
[Lula does a childish voice mimicking Eduardo]: “Hey, Trump, for God's sake, Trump, my free my daddy, don't let my daddy be arrested, bwaah bwaah”.
[Lula returns to his normal voice]: These people need to be ashamed of themselves. Be ashamed of yourself, be ashamed of yourself, because the smallest thing in a man, he has no character. You saw his son on the internet yesterday reading a letter:
[Lula does a childish voice mimicking Eduardo]: "'Oh, Trump, Trump' you know? 'Pwease say you won't tax Brazil, if my father isn't arrested.' What kind of man is this, folks? What kind of man is this who has no shame? Shouldn't he be facing his trial head on and proving that he was innocent [instead of doing this]?"
a) The protests there continue and grow in size b) The government is forced to concede
Yea, I also find it very strange how Panama and the DR, which have been invaded and attacked by the US several times and have had their leaders imprisoned or exiled, are also very pro-US. But I think that's just the strength of US influence in these countries, and in Latin America as a whole. At least with Trump openly attacking Mexico and South America, I've seen many libs become pro-China because they hate Trump and see China and Xi as the “lesser evil”, and because China, North Korea, South Korea and Japan have always had good relations with Latin America.
The Chinese continue to control the canal in the eyes of Trump.
China is/was building railways in Nicaragua, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, just so they don't have to deal with Trump's bullshit.
:this:
Panama
Tbh, Panama is very Pro-US, I guess they only lose to Costa Rica and DR when it comes to support for the USA. But the Canal stuff Trump said really pissed them off, and they never really had a strong communist or socialist movement (I suppose Gen. Omar Torrijos was more like a left-wing SocDem Military Dictator who had vague socialist tendencies).
Do you think Trump could help radicalize Brazil? Make it less liberal?
No, I believe not until Lula da Silva leaves power as president, he is the leader of one of the more moderate left-wing factions within the Workers' Party (the party is generally more left-wing than Lula, while Lula is a SocDem, the party supports Democratic Socialism). And Lula is still the most influential and popular left-wing leader in Brazil. So unless Trump does something really stupid, like attempt a military coup or mess with Brazil too much, I don't see Lula becoming totally left-wing. I believe there is potential for a Workers Party candidate to be a democratic socialist and be elected and supported by Lula in the future, if the left becomes popular/right becomes unpopular enough for that to happen.
Force it into stronger coalitions with China or anti-imperialist, non-Western countries?
This I can see happening, as Lula generally has a good foreign policy that hasn't changed much since the early 1990s (they used to be pro-Soviet, but quickly changed to pro-China, but also maintained their own independence in trying to create their own Latin American political bloc, which led to the creation of the São Paulo Forum). Lula also has strong ties with the Middle East, Africa and Asia. I'm sure that Brazil to this day helps train the armies of Namibia and Angola.
There was some talk of resurrecting Unasur (South America's version of the European Union), but it didn't go anywhere. I think this is because Brazil and most of Latin America want Celac to be more than their version of the OAS, I think they want it to be the Latin American version of the European Union/African Union in the future. Another thing that many people don't talk about is how much Brazil influences Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia and even Suriname, Guyana and Venezuela. It's quite clear that Lula sent part of his campaign staff to help elect Yamandú Orsi (Mojica's presidential candidate) in Uruguay, and, iirc, he also sent the same staff to help Maduro during the election campaign, to Efraín Alegre (Liberal Party - Pro-China Social Democrat) in Paraguay and to Sergio Massa (Left Peronist - Social Democrat) in Argentina.
Make it less liberal?
In some Latin American countries, the word liberal also means neoliberal/socially conservative. Generally, party names usually means nothing or make little sense, because politics has changed so much over time that the original party name usually lose its meaning. Example: The Liberal Party of Paraguay is a left-wing social democratic party that supports China, and the Liberal Party of Brazil is a far-right Bolsonaro party that is pro-US.
