Alright this just struck me as so on so many levels. Like, not just the randomness of GPS being the specific thing that is the singular modern miracle, not just that new-fangled technology existing that people who are now dead didn't get to experience is the reason why it's sad they're dead, but even why it is noteworthy that Helen Mirren has these thoughts, and why was she saying this of Kurt Cobain of all people?

I figured there had to be more context, and there is, but nowhere near enough to adequately answer my questions. Apparently though, this isn't a one-off. She is known for talking about Kurt Cobain and how modern technology relates to his death.

Of course, the comment came amid a broader point she was making about aging. “If you’re lucky, you get to be older,” she continued. “And then there you are. Oh my God, I’m 79! I never thought I’d be 79. And then you say, OK, well this is it. This is what 79 is. And it’s kind of OK. It’s not brilliant, but it was not that brilliant to be 25 either.”

Mirren has referenced Cobain numerous times in the past when discussing the nature of aging. In 2014, she told Oprah Winfrey, “Look at Kurt Cobain — he hardly even saw a computer! The digital stuff that’s going on is so exciting. I’m just so curious about what happens next.”

A year later, she told Cosmopolitan, “I was thinking about Kurt Cobain the other day and he died without knowing the internet, and I’m totally blown away by that.” And, in 2016, she said to the Daily Mail, “If I’d died at 27, the age that Kurt Cobain [of rock band Nirvana] died in 1994, I’d never have even known there was an internet! Incredible things are happening all the time and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

I suppose it's mildly (very mildly) interesting to know that some celebrity I have a vague notion of (Mirren) is an unlikely fan of another celebrity who I was once a huge fan of. And I guess everyone has their own unique ways of contemplating their mortality.

I was talking about this with a friend years ago how fucking common it was for the classic rockstars (mostly of previous generations to what we listened to, but sadly some more recent too) to be full on pedos. I did a little bit of reading on the subject and it is gut-churning. Not just how ubiquitous it was, but also how largely accepted it was (and continues to be), and also how severe so much of it was.

Gary Glitter is probably the most egregious and well known as far as like Epstein level offenses, you can look him up if you want the sickening details. Obvious huge CW if you do. There's another name that always comes up with this stuff that I'm hesitant to even mention because he was more of a nobody than a true rockstar and became famous more for his crimes and how extreme they were than for his music, though his band did have a following that he drew his victims from. NSFL kind of shit.

If we were to make a list, it might be easier to name the major classic rock stars that weren't creepers in some way. Like Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page "dating" the same 14 year old girl Lori Maddox (major CW here: common term for her was that she was a "baby groupie") at the same time, and like David Bowie was involved with her too somehow? The bassist for the Rolling Stones (Wyman) was 47 in a "relationship" with a 13 year old. The drummer for the Eagles was in legal trouble regarding a 16 year old. Then there's Pete Townsend of The Who getting caught paying with his credit card for CSAM but used the excuse that he was trying to catch the predators and do "research" regarding his own abuse. I don't know enough about that one, maybe he doesn't belong on the same list, but it seems pretty sus. People in the thread mentioning the "Little girl, what's your name?" lyrics and that's Lynard Skynard. And of course My Sharona. There's a bunch of songs I can't remember atm saying the same kind of thing. I think Iggy Pop also has some lyrics about some of his known underage fans. Stephen Tyler (Aerosmith) and fucking Ted Nugent both became "legal guardians" of underage girls for the reasons you are correctly assuming but wish you weren't. Jerry Lee Lewis famously married his 13 year old cousin. Elvis Presley and Priscilla was like 14. List goes on.

Yeah, unfortunately 12ft.io didn't keep up with the paywall arms race. It's too bad because it was one of those things that a lot of people knew about, many of whom may now just give up when it doesn't work even though there are other options out there.

I mostly would just archive a paywallrd page with archive.is (aka archive.today, archive.ph, etc.) and that worked great and also helped take traffic away from asshole sites that paywall content. Unfortunately, archive started requiring a cloud flare captcha when archiving a page. This is a deal breaker for me since captcha totally deanonymizes you and is used for tracking purposes and even to train AI. So it defeats a good chunk of the purpose of using an archive site.

Still, there's a good chance that someone else already archived the page you want to see, so putting the url in archive.is search can be enough to bypass the paywall.

Woah, what an odd coincidence for me. I haven't listened to Rammstein for literally years (I was never much of a fan or anything, just liked some of the stuff they did and knew they were cool as far as politics). But just last night I happened to think of one of their songs and decided to loop it a few times for nostalgia's sake. Crazy. Anyway, as everyone has said, they are pretty decent politically, but I had no idea there was any SA stuff, so that's a major disappointment but not totally surprising. The song that I happened to remember and that made me want to listen to them for the first time in years was "Amerika." It goes even harder with the video.

For sure. r/collapse is the perfect example of how leftism was asserting itself somewhat on reddit and what the outcome of that was to be. Although that sub always had an odious element of ecofash and reactionary garbage masquerading as progressivism (we are talking about here of course), previously that shit would get challenged and corrected. The malthusian dreck used to get actual pushback. But after the long purge, it just became the default and even what defined the sub. Reddit was always reddit, but for a time it actually had some redeeming qualities. Not anymore, not for a while.

Yep, along with other fairly well-known ones like genzedong, there were a few niche leftists subs I subscribed to that either got banned or quarantined to death within a year of CTH or had a kind of mini mod coup and veered immediately the right. And subs like r/collapse and r/capitalismindecay that may not have been explicitly leftist but were fertile ground for it and had leftie regular posters got usurped and their narrative steered back towards a course that could still fit within the parameters of neoliberal acceptability.

It was definitely part of an intentional, concerted effort to purge of the growing leftism on the site, with r/cth eing the most threatening example because it was the most popular. Like most social media platforms at the time, reddit was really starting to lock down what was ideologically acceptable. I've commented about it before, most recently here:

That may have been their excuse to pull the trigger but the reason they banned us was because the sub was becoming very well known, with posts regularly making it to the front page. During a time when reddit was really starting to actively sanitize itself of any actual leftism (for the sake of advertisers, profit, etc. as well as for the sake of becoming the major NATO propaganda hub that it is today) r/cth represented the complete opposite of the direction they were steering the platform. It was quite literally a purge of leftists across the platform and it would have happened whether or not we toed the line by not saying slave owners deserve death anymore or posting John Brown memes. In short, the sub was just starting to get some hints of more mainstream internet attention and there was no way in hell they were going to let that stand.

It fucking sucks how unusable the internet has become for that sort of thing. Reddit swept up all the old forums, monopolized that kind of community discussion-based information and then completely enshittified it. Maybe I shouldn't say "completely" because they're still in the process of making it worse.

I hope you were able to eventually find information that satisfied you, but in case you didn't already see this elsewhere, it's not color alone that should necessarily be cause for concern, it's also consistency (and by that I mean texture, not regularity). If it's black but normal shape and texture for you, like many others here have said, it's reasonably likely just a matter of something you ate (like the chips you mentioned). However, if the consistency is also abnormal for you, especially if it's really tarry (black tar) then that may warrant telling a med professional irl about it.

I remember someone (probably here) saying that the Shadow of Mordor/War "Nemesis System" could have become a widespread gaming system similar to how the unique mechanics of Dark Souls games became an entire genre and now there are all kinds of games that use the system and tinker with variations on it to great effect now called "soulslike." But because WB or Ubisoft or whoever made a show of patenting the system (and apparently won actual lawsuit challenges to it?) there is no genre of "shadowlike" or "nemesislike" games. That it was a clear example of a patent actually depriving us of an entire potential genre of games.
