I would add SmartTube for Android TV.

I was surprised to see only one other reference to Twitch. I have found Twitch to be AMAZING for new music discovery. MOST of the time when I listen to music, it is actually through Twitch. I have many good hosts saved and checking the who's on now page is the first thing I do when I want to turn on music. And when the apocalypse comes, I have a good library myself now...

There's a catch, of course. A lot of Twitch streamers are fucking irritating! It takes time to find channels that meet my needs...

  • Plays my kind of music (classic rock, 80s, industrial, darkwave, synthpop, electro, gothic rock, some dance genres like filth... to name a few). If anyone wants channel recommendations I am happy to list some.
  • Ideally, the video feed clearly shows the track ID (so I know what music to grab!)
  • The host isn't on mic all the time. It just kills me when I find someone playing good music with track IDs and they talk too much. The more of the video frame taken up by the DJ, and the bigger the mic, the greater the chance that they won't shut up, haha.

A good host will namedrop and raid hosts with similar taste, so once you find a couple that you like, your list of follows will expand quickly.

Here are a few more tips...

  • If you follow someone on Twitch, there is a separate toggle for receiving notifications when they go live. For 95% of the people I follow, notifications are OFF. A few are so good I want notifications.
  • "Alternative Player for Twitch" in the Chrome extensions is a cool alternate client that MUTES ADS. There are a few such extensions, this one has been the most reliable for me. However, for some reason it does not support taking you on a raid (that is when your channel ends and sends all the viewers to someone else).
  • There is a cool alternate client for Android TV called S0undTV.
  • Some Twitch hosts will put their shows on Mixcloud too, so check their details
  • Even if a host does not list the track IDs for what they are playing you may have success IDing music with something like Shazaam. On-screen ID is so convenient though.
  • Get to know a mass tagging tool like mp3tag, and you can RAPIDLY expand the size of your music library.
  • It seems impossible to tell Twitch to not suggest channels that you are not interested in. You can spend hours trying to kill off bad recommendations but it doesn't matter. For example I do not care about game streaming or people playing live music but I CANNOT get them out of my Recommended list. You just have to learn to ignore them.

Thanks for that explanation. I have seen references to Tailscale forever and even looked at the official web site... And you explained it better than they did.

Plex has a lot of issues but that criticism I do not get: they have one payment tier. If you pay, no features are held back.

The only exception I can remember is when they had that stupid arcade game feature, which was a separate monthly fee. It's long dead now.

It looks like I can send a PM, but if I try composing one to you it warns that it will not be secure. I guess this admin could read it, but it won't be public.

I would not want the download to commence automatically, but having a a download button on each YT page would be very convenient. Obviously I have yt-dlp installed already but if I can mash a button on the page and get a download going immediately, that saves a lot of clicks.

I will give you a quick overview of what I have found. No invitations are needed for the indexers I use. AFAIK we can name names here, right?

NZBPlanet has been good for me, and I bought lifetime there years ago. However, as time went on I noticed some holes in their coverage--mainly for older stuff. I still use it as my primary, though. I am not sure if they still sell the lifetime tier, but registration is open so you can take a look. I am not sure what the free tier gets you though, it isn't listed in their tiers page. If you are interested primarily in current stuff, I feel like the lifetime membership still ain't bad. Registration appears to be open.

I found that DrunkenSlug filled in a lot of the gaps that I found on NZBPlanet. I liked it enough that I recently bought a year. The free tier at 5 downloads per day is not generous, but it can definitely help if you are in a jam. They also have open registration, at least right now.

ABNZB is also in my rotation, but only at the free tier, which is also 5 downloads. (I think I am a "legacy" free member with 25 downloads.) My impression is that its coverage is similar to NZBPlanet but once in a while it helps me find something that I don't find at Planet or Slug.

Lastly, the totally free and primitive looking binsearch.info is worth a bookmark as a site of last resort. It's bailed me out before.

If I was starting over from scratch I might do Slug instead of Planet.

We're all looking for different stuff and it's hard to be definitive about coverage, but these are my impressions.

For a server I have been very happy with Eweka. I don't even have a block account elsewhere for fills. Once in a blue moon there is something I can't get at all, I just roll with it. I already have more Linux ISOs than I can use. :)

Good summary, that will help a lot of people.

I think it is worth pointing out to those that don't know that automation via the *arr apps is optional. Sure, it's great, but it's not like you need to learn that whole toolchain right away. With a good indexer, a good server, and a good download app you can get going really easily. You're just doing manual searches and clicking to download nzb files.

I have also found that having more than one indexer helps. Part of the trick is finding a few that complement each other--and then getting an invitation to register. Everyone has their own opinion on what combos are good.

The two things are similar in the big picture view. You do a direct download from Usenet as well. The difference is in where the data comes from (people choosing to upload files, like they choose to seed) and how exactly you download it (you need one or more usenet indexer accounts plus download tools).

Usenet is basically an old school message board that has adapted to host binary files instead of shitposts. :)

It looks great! Thanks!

I actually also thanked Cinder for updating their post.

Thanks for updating your post to the new format... The extra info really helps. I appreciate you being active here so I don't have to get on the discord right away.

I'll keep an eye on Cinder, that kind of support is great.

Looks like our admin is going to change the posting rules so the providers will fill out a template with more of this kind of information, which will be awesome.
