Folding Ideas did an incredibly good documentary about NFTs that goes into this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g
The problem is that almost all American media prides itself on being "unbiased," and is completely terrified of appearing otherwise. They spend millions to avoid appearing biased toward the left, specifically.
So, when they have spent lots of time talking about Trumps recent indictment, they feel the most "unbiased" thing to do is also to give a similar amount of coverage to this story, because that way they avoid accusations of being "biased."
Every top comment talks about trump because that is the actually relevant story. An ex-president being indicted for potentially jeopardizing national security is a SIGNIFICANTLY more important story that the presidents son dodging taxes and maybe illegally owning a gun. The two are in different universes of importance. It's frustrating to see the media in general get so easily distracted by a story like this with questionable importance when there are significantly more important things happening right now.
The problem is that even the official lemmy documentation heavily implies that it doesn't matter which instance you join because "you'll still be able to interact with communities on other instances."
I've been enjoying my time here, but there are some very valid concerns about how the current model of federation will impact Lemmy's ability to ever really be an alternative to other social media- the obvious one here being Reddit. The Beehaw defederation really shows part of the problem here, because multiple of the largest communities that I see on Lemmy are hosted there. Yes, users on lemmy.world COULD make their own versions of those, but three days ago they already existed, were already being interacted with by hundreds of people in lemmy.world, and those communities are just... gone. Thanos snapped away from people on lemmy.world, who will understandably feel kinda miffed.
OK, so, I actually did this a few months ago!
But, in my opinion, it is not a 100% replacement for toilet paper. First, everything gets wet after using-and if you're hairy like me you really do want to dry it, and I use TP to do that. Also, I've noticed that it doesn't always get everything-and using some TP to dry off is also a good way to make sure everything is clean.
And it also has a good bit of spray that will land on the seat and the bidet itself. You need to clean that off, I tend to do it with toilet paper when I stand up.
You won't stop using TP, but you'll certainly use less of it, I think I use about half as much now as before.
Ok seriously why is this guy going around pasting random parts of the time cube?
Engagement is what makes or breaks a social media platform, especially in it's early days.
Right now, anything that boosts engagement is 100% good IMO. that will help retain users and attract more.
Is this time cube? Because if not you managed to sound exactly like him. That is to say, completely crazy.
Why did you post this here?
Pretty! Any idea what species? I'm terrible at identifying bugs...
I wish some of these subs would stand their ground and make the admin replace them. That would cause the admin seven bigger headaches down the line, because a lot of the mods they impose would likely not be as good, not be as committed, and would be less strict in moderation, leading to a big pain for advertisers who suddenly would see lots of content next to their ads that is very not good.
I agree with your point about the difference between the lemmy and mastodon websites; lemmy could do a significantly better job attracting more users if it changed the welcome page to make the more familiar features clearer.
At the end of the day, federation isn't the important part here IMO. Lemmy is still a social media platform, and social media rides or dies on engagement. Without users, there isn't engagement. I know that tiny communities can exist for years just fine online, and that lemmy did so with a very small user base. But, if people on here seriously want a true alternative to other social media, that alternative needs to show that it has enough engagement to keep people coming back.
To me it's much more important to show prospective users that the tools for engaging with the sited platform are familiar and easy to use, than it is to dive into the details of how federation works. The average user simply won't care about federation unless it directly affects them.
And frankly, those old internet forums went out of style for a good reason. It was annoying to have 10 accounts to keep track of on 10 different social media sites. I don't think anyone today would say that signing up or distinct forums that fo us on topics you care about is a true alternative to big social media like reddit. The way lemmy talks about itself right now makes it seem like you're back on the old forum system, when the whole point of federation is exactly the opposite of that! This FIXES the "you need 10 accounts" problem for the most part. At the end of the day, people want to know that a thing is easy to use and understand, and that other people with similar interests are using it.
We badly need laws defining digital property rights, especially as it relates to accounts.
Regardless of whether you think it's "stupid" or not, some people do collect reddit avatars, and have paid lot of money in pursuit of doing so. I don't think that reddit should be able to just yank the rug out from under them unless they go out of business as a company.
Especially not when reddit has deliberately marketed these avatars to the kind of people who would start collecting them, then deliberately encouraged those people to contue spending money.
It's like a casino letting you gamble all night, then selling you you're not allowed to cash any of it out at the end of the night because the floor manager decided they don't like your tie. You didn't break any rules, but now you're out a bunch of money. And in the case of reddit, there's no recourse, unlike the casino. Because companies are allowed to create terms of service agreements which specifically prohibit you from suing them in real court or forming class action lawsuits they can financially exploit you however they want with no repercussions
