When we see a post of yours, we all know in advance that the source will be somewhat reputable...

Well, let's not say that the source will necessarily be reputable. Hotznplotzn has posted links from

And last but certainly not least:

The CCP government itself.

Hotznplotzn already believes "If the... China-based media outlet would publish anything that is against Beijing's narratives, it would be immediately censored (and the journalists may face severe punishments)."

Wouldn't that make Hotznplotzn the CCP-supporting propagandist?

I imagine they might care because advertisements are their source of revenue on that platform, which I believe loses money regardless. They're also getting increasingly adamant about breaking people's ad blockers.

It also appears to me that every combination of functional use requires some form of identification:

  • If you're logged out, they're okay with you browsing from an identifiable home IP address.
  • If you're on a VPN, they're okay with showing your videos if you log in so they can track your viewing habits.
  • If you're on a VPN and make a new account, they want your phone number so they can tie your identity to an actual human being.

It might be a bit paranoid, but these factors combined suggest that Google does not want us to watch videos without providing some form of (inferrable) personal identification. And if Google can't get what it wants, specifically data and ad revenue, they might be very willing to terminate an account that's draining their coffers.

Do you mean the Privacy community on lemmy.ml?

I got temporarily banned there after criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and a moderator proceeded to remove most of my comments from the thread. Only the ones with >0 upvotes, interestingly. I give the ML mods brownie points for technique, at least.

(Regarding if "off topic" is PTB: I'm not sure if AI generation specifically regarding Tianmen square is on-topic for privacy, but I imagine it would be at home in communities discussing technology, AI, even free speech. But let's be fair, it's definitely pretense for an unwarranted instance-wide ban. Far more PTB than BPR.)

there were rumors that there would be a reasonable free backup (ex. up to 1 Gb) with relatively cheap paid options above that. I scrolled through the GitHub link and couldn't confirm or deny if this is still/actually the case.

There's no concrete pricing plan, although there were specifics that were originally tied to those rumors.

It has been confirmed that these plans are only test data. They will change before release and were never meant to be actual plans.

I can confirm that, as someone else who has been passively listening to discussions about it, that's the exact impression I got.

Information is available on the unofficial Signal wiki, if you feel like digging around.

Edit: apparently discussions go back at least a year. Here's one titled "Signal is getting Cloud Backups"

You quote part of an article you linked as if it applies specifically to BYD.

Yeah, forced labour, lack of living wages and restrictions to freedom of association are just some issues that persist within the industry and its supply chain...

It does not. The exact same text appears above their assessment of Tesla.

(They even score the exact same on "Embedding respect and human rights due diligence", isn't that nice!)

Just a casual reminder to always remember to be honest in your criticism.
