Shipping was sabotaged and it just doesn't make sense to buy local. The item is more expensive and there's a 30 to 60 dollar shipping fee tagged on. It's usually the same made in china quality.

For work related stuff, I bypass both and get straight from China.

I don't like it but the gov didn't step in and basically handed half our economy to Amazon. At the height of it, they decided to sell our national shipping service so prices went up (I'm in Canada btw).

In a perfect world, amazon would get the boot and we would have a government owned drop shipping infrastructure. Until that happens, I'm not ready to pay 3x the price for simple items just to keep a dead dream alive. Local got snuffed when it comes to consumer goods.

I've read memory of empire lately, which is a political intrigue in a Sci Fi setting. It's centered around one city palace.

I second Lebowitz, the expanse and Ursula especially. Left hand of darkness is amazing.

If you enjoy project hail Mary and the generational aspect of 1000 years of solitude, you might enjoy children of time which has similar themes. It's my current favorite.

Rainbows end, windup girl and scanner darkly are also great suggestions with no space travel.

That's nifty, I didn't know that. Hexbear more like hacksbear.

I'm no expert either but from what I gather, that's a big part of their cost so you end up spiking your normal rail construction by quite a bit.

Any rail is good rail though, I just want them to get on with it.

Nonetheless, I only see one instance abusing of the bug. It's definitely lemmy growing pains though. I'm hoping some instance just outright ban images and emoticon, I always hated them. The little 🤣🤣🤣 always screamed teenage bullshit to me.

No one is upset about people burning a Koran in their backyard firepit. The example is very similar to what is happening.

I agree with you but I don't think you can simply convert. HSR take a lot more engineering and careful planning.

I find the memes funny but the image abuse is obnoxious. I'm not a big fan of defederation so I always end up defending you guys but seriously, wtf?

What about burning crosses on someone's lawn, or flying Nazi flags? Lmao, they could just not burn the damn book. Usually, people being dicks don't have a army of people coming to their defence.

Obviously you don't care, you aren't the one being personally attacked so you can just overlook it. But if this happened in a vaccum, you wouldn't be defending the Nazi burning a Torah infront of a synagogue yet here we are.

Look, I hate the policies in the middle east as well, but I'm able to differentiate between individuals and governments. This is Muslim hate and nothing else.

There would be a justified outcry if a Torah was burned in front of a synagogue. The instigators would quickly be villefied and called Nazis. At the minimum, no one would be actively defending it.

It shouldn't have to be against the law, but people are abusing to the point of starting riots. It's disturbing the peace. I lump this in with following people and screaming racial slurs constantly at the top of your lungs. Freedom of speech only goes so far, I'm okay with banning clear hate speech and similar actions.

No, no straws for anyone, and take away their special ramps too. It's all or nothing because that's the only way my argument works. Color spectrum, exceptions? All I see is black and white.
