I'm not arguing for lost profits, I don't really care except for the writers and other creatives should get paid. But pirates should just admit that they want shit for free, this holier-than-thou act is annoying and crumbles at the first step. Before arguing for the ethicality maybe come up with a solution or at least disapprove the new media piracy. Because that's a huge, huge side-effect. More like the effect and media preservation is tacked on positive side effect.

Except piracy peaks at the recent releases. That isn't about media preservation, it's about seeing the new shit for free.
For some hard to impossible find stuff it can be useful but that's not what it's mostly used for.
That's what the article is baiting... People are desperate to be mad at Meta for this so it's easy clicks.
There's also users that potentially could join other instances but because of some exclusive feature Threads has, they choose it. So basically rest of the instances are bleeding users to Threads.
I guess the fear (and probable strategy for Meta) is to first establish themselves as just a reliable instance with a closed app (Threads). From there, it's a slow crawl to bring in the users, from outside but also from other instances. They have multiple tools for this: the infinite budget to develop Threads with exclusive features, just a better app, maybe influencer friendly ad models. The list is infinite.
So where's the rub? Meta is just introducing activity pub to more users.
The problem is two step: They'll eventually will lock in the platform from rest of the fediverse. It'll might be years from now but it'll happen (unless it's killed first if course). This hurts rest of the fediverse by making it smaller: They will hook in users that would've otherwise chosen another instance and now are in Meta's side fence which has turned into a wall.
Note: Not an expert, I just like to speculate.
Probably I won't be sharing tweets anytime soon. Add in the fact that there's no official announcement, they might reverse this in 15 minutes when Musk's next tantrum starts. So why bother.
What about the rate limits that combated the extreme data scraping or whatever it was?
Oh, was EU able to block them from joining the fediverse or are they just stalling for some other reason?
They're opening their mouths. That's enough. Be the change doesn't mean anything if shitposting to death about that particular day's meme is the thing everyone else is into.
But everyone isn't into that. I certainly aren't. So I suppose there's hope for me and Enttropy.
Also, I noticed that I spent less time here when the front page was full of beans and then meta discussions about Lemmy/kbin/Reddit with pretty noticeable whiff folks being up their own ass about this place being better than Reddit.
I was gonna post that this place becoming Reddit in the worst way, bean posting being in my mind. Hadn't considered this.
Still, an easy way to find out if this conspiracy is true is by checking who upvoted those posts.
Or you could use a temporary email service, though I'm not sure what the services do with the temporary addresses after they expire. If someone knows, please enlighten me.
There's the legit arguments and then there's just I'm angry and want to complain out loud. Look at me. Reminds me of Reddit.
