They get defederated wherever they get consistently banned...and then they can federate with their friends and make their community of shit and yell at each other or something.
It's interesting, because moderation here is public: you can check the modlog at the bottom of the page to see what was removed. Transparency is awesome, plus you get to see what mods have to deal with every day.
I understand, I'm speculating, but from what I've read it happens occasionally if you try to host your own email or chat server: you may get blacklisted. Or they could hypothetically hike the costs of certain server features needed to host your own instance instead of an established one.
I love the idea of having motorized blinds and windows that automatically open/close coordinated with thermometers to regulate house temperature.
