Exactly, they want it all. We will never be safe until Putin and his like are out of the picture.

He's probably hoping (and almost certainly working behind the scenes to make it happen ie Trump and similar) that NATO wouldn't join in. We're paying the price for our inaction amd policies over the past seventy five years or so.
It's now going to be even more expensive in money, suffering and lives.
