I can't remember where I read this but I saw somewhere that open firmware is forbidden in things like cellular modems because it might be abused to disrupt communications. I think that's bullshite, though.

You can plug a thumb drive in most phones nowadays.
A log splitter will work just as well.
I did that while getting on my bike once, very pain.

Why not just encrypt your data before uploading to the cloud?
I use JOSM to add features in the map, last time I used it I was contributing the local bus routes in my area.
